i always wondered this as well, i know that i cant ping my computers once they go to sleep (suspend), so i get the feeling that for the downloads to continue, the computer would have to recognize such transfers as "un-idle" activities, but it seem like it would be difficult for the machine to distinguish between idle traffic and an actual download. in any case, i'm curious what the specifics are, as far as what windows officially deems as "idle".

it's the one thing that has kept me from using suspend on a normal basis, and i'd really like to start. i just fear that day when i start a torrent before school, come home, and find my computer quit downloading and went to sleep after 30 min. that would be absolutely devastating to me.

Ai, like gold fall the leaves in the wind... long years numberless as the wings of trees. Correct. Sleep puts everything into RAM and stops the disk drives completely; thus, no more activity going on.

Hibernate will also stop everything. Only Hibernation goes into a deeper suspend mode and copies everything to the hard disk before cutting off power consumption.

correct, if your computer is still downloading, then it aint asleep.

There is just enough juice to hold info in ram.

Your monitor can goto sleep without the computer going to sleep and vise versa, that is where some of you may be confused.

The power light on your computer should either be blinking or orange to indicate that it is in sleep mode. Sometimes the cpu fan may remain on.

In hibernate, everything in RAM is written to the harddrive and the computer turns completely off. When resuming from hibernation, the computer will re-read ram data back from the HD.

I set all my laptops to hibernate when I close the lid. That way it turns completely off and uses no juice and only takes 5-10 seconds to resume, rather then the minute or so for a full boot.

My desktops at home, I just leave them on 24/7 unless I go out of town.

I always heard/read that was a wonderful way to thrash the hell out of disk drives.

I've only ever owned one laptop, and that 12" alBook could sleep for about 3 days on battery so I never worried about how it handled everything.

I've never had any problems in hibernating any of my laptops.
