What kind of psu do you have?
I know on mine that the last 4 pins break apart from the clip. I'd assume that the first 20 pins have to be the same. I mean the only difference is that on mine they snap apart from the clip, and on yours they might not.
Only issue I could really think of is that the psu clip might not line up and snap down on the motherboard clip. But it should stay in place regardless
I just got a new PSU too and I had the same thing happen. I have a 20 pin MB, so when I opened up the box and saw it was a 24 pin connector and thought "Oh ****, will this work?" I was afraid my system was going to get fried somehow.
