Awesome build thread. I believe the Aragona family has the toyota powered altered you mentioned in your one post? I saw them testing it at a local event here maybe two years ago? Very cool car you have. Sounds really crisp and efficient going through the gears

I myself have a front motored ex g-dragster with the air cooled vw motor and have a Kennedy adapters set up with a flex plate and BBC flywheel going through a powerglide. I would love to try and get a 3 speed down the road even though we are only bracket racing it.

Very nice car Josh..I saw your car in Pomona and was very impressed! You are going to make that engine platform very popular in that class!

Yes I believe Aragona has a Toyota engine in his car, Im not sure what engine exactly though.

Thank you.

On a small engine the extra gear helps out a ton, but it also cost way more then a powerglide. Your car sounds like a cool setup.

I know they wont fit on the manifold and making a new one and buying another set of carbs is expensive.....but if you need more flow, have you thought about using two, downdraft Weber carbs? Stock throttle body size is 48mm but they can be made to 51.5mm, 52mm and even 58mm. I thought maybe the individual throttle body for each cylinder and being placed directly inline with each piston may be of some benefit? Plus I believe they can flow well over 1100 CFM combined. With your engine being mounted on an angle, it would make these carbs. upright, kind of like they originally were on the Ford Cobra motors

Being from the VW world this is what we use and there is a guy in California named Jack Sachette who was building an all motor Honda at one point so he is sort of a cross over. Also very big into the carburetors. His company is Jay Cee Enterprises. Just trying to throw something differant out there to look into because I know guys in comp are always thinking about how to get one or 2 more horsepower

I have tossed the idea around about using Webers but I dont think they would be ideal. My main reason for using Holleys is the fact that I know how to tune them fairly well. Holley also pays contingency money, so that was also a determining factor. I donk think the webers would flow enough air to support the engine. We can run Webers but only up to 55mm, per NHRA rules. And to me thats not big enough on an individual runner setup. With the Holleys and the plenum setup I can run smaller carbs and still have enough airflow as one cylinder can feed off of all 4 barrels. However its not that simple or straightforward because of reversion and wave harmonics. On the dyno you can see fuel stack off come and go above the carbs as you accelerate the engine through the rpm range. You cant really see it in this video but it there and it makes tuning a 4 banger really difficult. Thats why I wish we could run fuel injection, it would make more average power and be easier for me to tune.

There are some benefits to an individual runner set up on a 4 cylinder. But the best carburetors to use in my opinion are not allowed by NHRA's rules. I would use motorcycle carbs if it were legal. Because in all actuality I run a big displacement pro stock motorcycle engine.

Ive never meet Jack Sachette but Im very aware of him and his company. My dad back in the day raced VWs. But thank you for the your ideas.

Great video!! Your altered always sounds crisp and smooth all the way through the RPM range. I agree 1005 on the FI being a lot easier to tune and would be better for the application. Also your comparison to your stuff being an oversized PSM engine is spot on! I have thought about trying to run a split dominator carb on each side of my engine but think I will be going to FI myself.

I hope you have enough success to get in on that contigencey money and make a big splash in the comp field. I think you have really opened a new door with a lot of potential still. Kick *** and go some rounds at the Winter Nationals!

Wow! Welcome to Comp Eliminator! You've sure done well in a very short time. Congratulations! I'm glad to see someone else racing in our class with an import motor. I wish we could get some of the fast front wheel drive guys to try Comp. There's some cars out there that I think would be competitive if they would give it a try.

Thank you, Comp is a tough and demanding but very rewarding class to run. Im happy to be able to run comp. I've grow up racing cause of my dad Jimmy Lee, and particularly around comp. My mentor was a former Modified Eliminator World Champ Jim Stevens. I've also had people like 3 time Comp World Champ Bill Maropulos (which my brother Dustin worked for), around me so I have had some exceptional teachers to learn from.

Beautiful!!!

the 1105# weight. I often wonder about that. We built an old school dragster 135"wb and it was nearly 1600#. Cast iron 292 inline 6 with a 400 on it. mild steel car.

How much lighter do you feel you could get it if rules weren't an issue?
