Check out the first dragster ever made (1955)
This is a pix of the Bean Bandits dragster from 1955. They would use the airport in Orange County, CA on Sundays to hold drag races there. If a plane had to land, they would just stop the races for a few minutes to let it touchdown.
Not much in the way of safety equipment...

This reminds me of the history of drag racing thing that was on tv a couple months ago. Those guys were straight up nuts...noway else to put it.
Btw, if anyone is interested...nhra.com has a photo album thing commemorating their 50th anniversary. It has photos from day one up to the present...lots of cool stuff in there (stuff like this pic).

Re: Check out the first dragster ever made (earl)
Dick Kraft built his Bug, considered by many to represent the first dragster campaigned on a regular basis, by stripping his roadster down to the bare framerails to drag race it in July 1950.
It's on display down at the NHRA Motorsports Museum at the Fairplex... pretty funky
