Ball bearing diff....a little insight needed
Looking around it seems like guys are going to a ball bearing for the differential bearings on an older B series hydro trans. I am putting together my dogbox, and was wondering about what all goes into using the ball bearings.
My question is specifically on the races or what has to be done to the case. I have a liberty billet clutch housing and then a stocker rear half. The core trans that I am using has tapered bearings.
From what I have found, you knock out the races from the tapered bearings, and the new ball bearings press in? Looks like there is also a shim that needs to be installed when making this switch?? Does anyone know what side it goes on?
Thanks for any help AND or pictures.

Use this link. I went through the same boat of questions a couple years ago and took the time to write it up and document everything should be self explanatory.

Re: Ball bearing diff....a little insight needed
Stock setup uses a shim in the top transmission housing and no shim in the clutch housing. However, with aftermarket gears and diffs all bets are off. There are two different oem bearings, one is 18mm thick and the other is 19.5mm. Most gsr applications will use 18mm and shim accordingly. Some b16 diffs will allow for the 19.5mm. You can also mix and match to move the diff up and down for better contact on the pinion.
Good luck.
