Default How to remove paint/nail polish from car paint?

So before we even get the car repaired after it was hit-and-run in a parking lot this happens. There is a small streak of what looks like paint or nail polish on the rear right door. It feels a little soft and chips off when I use my nail to try to get it off. What's the best way to get it off without damaging the paint?

Try detailing clay, available at almost any auto-parts store.

I heard clay can be pretty rough on paint. Will a polish and wax take care of that?

If done correctly it is completely safe for your car's paint.
I've used to it get sap/some sticky crap/ off of my car's paint with no problem.

Since you mentioned its soft and you can easily chip off, try......washing>clay bar>paint cleaner?
Or just chip it off if, its a small streak?

And you wouldn't want to polish with something like that on your paint, and a wax would just cover/protect it in.

A clay bar would easily scratch the surface of the paint as well.

Lacquer Thinner. No it will not ruin your clear in any way. Use just enough on a microfiber cloth, it will work right away. You can wipe the spot with final detail or something of that sort after. Grab some dupli-color lacquer, etc. Just stray away from plastic, trim, bumpers, etc. with lacquer. On the door it will work perfectly.

While detailing clay MIGHT mar the surface very SLIGHTLY I would have to respectfully disagree very strongly with the idea of putting lacquer thinner anywhere near your clear coat.

I will take a video of the process, and post it. It's completely safe to use the correct lacquer thinner.

Remember, Lacquer Thinner NOT Paint Thinner. It's used to safely remove other contaminants such as sap as well, as long as it's used on painted metal surfaces.

Example, Mineral Spirits works very well. I'd love to see paint ruined by applying it in the fashion I had said.

Goo Gone? i got gorilla glue (didn't notice it until it was dry) on my fender and used it to get rid the gorilla glue. i am definitely not a professional detailer/painter, so this is a just a suggestion.

Lacquer thinner is perfectly safe...I used it to removed my pin stripes (painted on from the dealer). It WILL make your paint a little hazy. All you need is any OTC polish/wax after and you'll be fine.

You can always test it on a inconspicuous spot that has paint, like behind the rear license plate.

That's a great idea for those afraid to use it

Lacquer Thinner.
Yeppers. Acetone works too. After gentle use of these products, a little polish applied by hand should remove any hazy residue left behind. Wax and enjoy!

With the amount of lacquer you'd have to use to even make a dent in that amount of paint, you'd most likely completely go through the original clear and into the OE paint as well and ruin those areas. Honestly if your on a tight budget, prep the car and give Maaco a call or have a buddy repaint the exterior to the original color.
