Hi Neko,
I'll upload some more photos of what I've been up to on the weekend. I've been ordering and waiting for some more parts for the front suspension which haven't all turned up yet. I've therefore been doing some work on my "other project" which started with installing electronic ignition but resulted in a distributor rebuild, buying more bits etc etc.

Something that came to my attention is that I hadn't originally installed a rubber boot in between the chassis mounting bracket and the bottom "A" arm. I only worked this out when I bought the last job lot. One of the spares I got had the remnants of one in place. I've since ordered the replacements from Ortmanns and installed on the "replacement" suspension.
The last photo shows the new O ring in the A arm

The radius arm bush I ordered from Ortmanns seemed a loose fit on the radium arm so I ordered two new bushes from Ricky Ngata. I've received them along with some other parts. These too are slightly loose on the shaft. Perhaps that's the way they were always. So I'll have too get them pressed into the bracket which bolts to the chassis
1) 1st photo shows the brackets I've now prepared for the replacement suspension along with the bush I received from Ortmanns
2) The second photo shows a complete assembled lower "A" arm to show where the bracket and bush sit

Always like looking at your POR15 application - makes me dream of tidying up my ratty chassis bits too...

Default Re: The Blue Coupe - gearstick

I've been gifted a gearstick which I've been dying to install to test my gearbox. The interesting thing is that some of the parts were different to what I already had. I suppose that'll come as no surprise as the cars were constantly changing during the manufacturing period. After dismantling I cleaned up and polished the shaft. What I did find was there was a lot of corrosion and pitting on the bottom ball that sits in the nylon bush of the selector arm. I decided to carefully smooth it out with the dremel and wet n dry sandpaper to ensure I took the minimum amount of material. I then greased, assembled and installed. The last two photos are the bottom ball before and after the smoothing out

The great news is that all the gears can be selected....thank God

The replacement front hub assemblies are ready to install. The back plates are in excellent condition and are the same size.

I finally found some new ball joint boots to fit the bottom wishbone. I also couldn't help myself and had some new front brake shoes re bonded at Western Clutch. This is my third or fourth go at the front suspension. Now to do the other side today

Well look what I've found...the elusive fuel rail body with the cam cover connection fitting. I've cleaned it up, polished it and fitted it. the last photo is the original fitting. They are not interchangeable

It is great to see the workmanship that you are putting into this classic, I am in the very early stages of the same, only a roadster.
Your work is inspiring me to get cracking on mine.
Regards, Tony

Tony,
Welcome to the fray. Having not worked on one before has made it a bit frustrating ....and slow...at times. Fortunately there are some very helpful people about who can provide advice. Good luck with it

Thank's Peter, I have never worked on one either, but I am no stranger to motorcycles, fabrication and general automotive rebuild work.

While my body will require more work than yours, I have a bit of a head start (I think) in that my engine was reconditioned around 20 years ago, all seals, gaskets, and chain rollers appear to be in good condition, but I really won't know until I start it.
My body is recently separated from its chassis, and the engine/trans is sitting loosely in the chassis.

I am still assessing which components I have and don't have as this car came as a bit of a jigsaw puzzle, but I would say it's 90% there.

Once organised, I hope to start a thread on my restoration.
What was the paint you used Peter, was it POR15 or a KBS equivalent?

Tony,
Having worked on motorcycles will be an advantage as the motor is essentially a motorbike motor converted for a car application. Unfortunately like yours, mine had been rebuilt many years before just prior to an accident so had done little work. Sitting around for so long caused several issues including
- The rings in one cylinder seizing into the piston grooves.
- The piston sleeves had also corroded and needed reboring.
- The pistons had also corroded a little although they had little scoring.
- Many other issues came to light as I rebuilt it. It had several wrong head bolts with the wrong thread!
- I had the head rebuilt professionally. They installed new guides and exhaust valves (they were shot)and set the clearances with new shims

So I had to rebuild the motor with new gaskets, pistons, rings and many other replacement components. Ortmanns supplied a lot of the parts. It ends up being quite costly
I assume you have a workshop and parts manual. If you don't I can email you a soft copy (in a few emails). Sometimes it's a little hard to follow but there's people who can help.
I used the KBS equivalent. I did however use primer a lot of the time as I found it gave the best adhesion. I've had no issues with it to date.

Thanks Peter, that is good info to be armed with. I should have explained that my engine was rebuilt and never used, no coolant, oil, never run, just wrapped in plastic and sat on a bench.
I hope I am wrong, but most of the issues you describe could be attributed to coolant leakage, contaminated oil etc, but I will check the bores with a bore scope first to see what is going on in there.....

I will be using a primer also, it is too hard to re-do later. Do you know the name of the KBS product, or should I just call them and ask?

I do need carb needles, jets and needle/seats for my carbs, along with all of the gaskets, the easy ones I will make myself.

I fear (for my bank balance) Mr Ortmann and I will need to get to know each other in the near future, body bolts, rubbers, carby bits, and numerous other small parts.

Tony.

The large diagonals are bolt holes to hold the carbs, one is a fuel feed, but what are the others for? I just did the same work on mine, and even reading the diagram I could not resolve... Neko

Had a few dramas this year. We had two deaths in the immediate family in 3 months earlier this year. So to cheer myself I've got myself another project. The garage is now chockers.

I'm modifying the frame to place the engine in the correct position and fixing the steering configuration. The good news is it is 600cc Yamaha thumper with the standard 6 speed. I'm changing the rear sprocket for hill climbing as we're going up to Gladstone to the mother in laws farm at Chrissy. There's some serious fun to have with this beast.

By the way, "the Toe Cutter knows who I am"

MT,
It in fact has a wider track than the Coupe although is a bit shorter. I've been spending a lot on time on it and none on the Coupe unfortunately. There's been a lot more to fix then I originally thought. I do seriously have to get a muffler back on the buggy. It's extremely loud. I have to wear earmuffs when I run it. It's like being at the drags
