86 1.5L head gasket job
I am replacing a head gasket for someone on their carbureted 86 civic. (I have only worked on fuel-injected d-series and b-series)
I'm guessing the following:
put car on jack stands
drain fluids
remove header
remove accessories
remove valve cover
remove timing belt
remove cam
remove head
Can the intake mani and carb stay on the head for removal, or do they have to come off too?
What else should I know about this job?
Thanks!

pretty much no need to touch the cam though .just set the engine to TDC and pull the head ,ghange the gasket and put it all back together .
you can leave the intake manifold on the head but why ??? just pull it ! its only like what 8 12mm nuts and don't forget the carb/intakemanifold support on the back of the IM and one bolt on the block
good luck
oh and have fun with the crank pulley lol

Cool - I didn't know that about being able to leave the cam in. On my b16 I have to remove both cams to get access to the head bolts.
as far as leaving the intake mani on, i figure we could hopefully save a gasket and some time, but no big deal I guess.
now what's this about the crank pulley? do i need a special tool or is it just a pain to work on? Is there a trick I should know?
thanks!

Re: (zakats)
ok how do you get the exhaust manifold back on?
I had to use a big pry bar to remove it...I'm not sure if the studs are slightly bent or if the manifold is warped, but I need to push it on another half-inch or so.
Someone suggested heating the manifold and hope for enough expansion to slide on.
I'm amost at the point where I'd remove the front end just to be able to take a whack at it with a dead-blow hammer. tips? tricks? bueller?

Re: (( o )( o ))
Ok so I stopped and thought for a minute. I removed two studs, the ones I thought were bent, and I was able to get the manifold on and get 2 new bolts to replace the studs.
I just need to flush the coolant and put a few things back together and I'm done.
Except - I can't figure out where to bolt the little metal hanger for the o2 sensor wire.....wtf does that go?
Does anyone have any pics of a carbureted 1.5L engine bay?
Thanks!
