1986 Honda Civic DX 165k miles Engine Rebuild & more (LOTS OF PICS)
i bought this 1986 Honda Civic DX for $550 i drove about 230 miles total to pick up the car, since then i parted out my 1987 CRX DX because it was a rust bucket.. soo many holes it wasnt safe....
the worst rust is around the windshield which isnt bad at all, the rest of the car is rust free
Original engine pulled....
Freshly cleaned D15A2 from my CRX
Freshly painted and assembled engine:
I installed new piston rings and rod bearings, i also have an Exedy OEM clutch kit with 2k from my CRX, i painted the engine block with High Temperature Resistant Low Gloss Black, i need to buy a shifter bushing kit and slap the engine and transmission in........ i will be getting a paintjob for about $500~

I took longer than expected to create this Guide.. i was waiting for the 4 speed so i could compare them side by side.. The 4 speed transmission and 5 speed transmissons have the same synchros, i have replaced the synchros in my 5 speed.... Both transmissions can be rebuilt using this guide as they are Exactly the same Besides 5th gear in the 5 speed........ i did notice that 4th gear in the 4 spd is approximately the same size as the 5th gear from the 5 spd....
SUGGESTIONS:
For anyone doing this for their first time... Having chapter 15 from the FSM on paper will make this VERY EASY
Because your transmission is already open and all apart it is best to Replace all the bearings, there is a page in the manual which tells you which parts should be Replaced upon rebuild...
If you would like to change your differential this would be the time to do so.
Tools Required:
3/8" rachet
3/8" Extension/s
3/8" 10mm Socket
3/8" 12mm Socket
5mm Pin punch
Bearing Puller
Philips Screw Driver
NOTES:

KA5MT Transmission Rebuild Kit $189.00 Seals & Synchros included:
http://rivergate5speed.com/honda_performance.html
* to lock up the transmission to remove the nut in Step 5, i hear some use a soda bottle cap between the gears and it locks it up.... i used a vice (not reusing that part so i didnt care too much)
* Remove ALL spring pins so you don have to fight with the puzzle of putting the shift rods/forks in the right order so it goes together....
Step #1: Remove the detent Retainer Screws & detent spring/ball:
Step #2: Unscrew all 5th gear housing bolts:
Step #3: Open transmission by removing the 5th gear housing (Chapter 15 Page 7 #1):
Step #4: removing the spring pin to the 5th gear fork, then remove the fork and 5th gear syncros/gears (Chapter 15 Page 9):
Step #5: remove 32mm Nut and remove 5th gear:
Step #6: take out all housing bolts and remove the housing:
Step #7: Remove shift forks/plate AND Reverse gear (Chapter 15 Page 10 #1 AND Page 11):
Step #8: remove the mainshaft:
Step #9: Remove Countershaft:
Step #10: Dissassemble Countershaft (Chapter 15 Page 15):
Step #11: Remove differential to replace bearings:
Step #12: Remove Remaining bearings and Replace Oil Seal:
Assembly:
Follow the steps in reverse and remember to put everything together back the way you took it apart use RTV to seal the transmission and you should have no parts/bolts/springs left (OBVIOUSLY)

Re: 1986 Honda Civic DX 165k miles Engine Rebuild & more (LOTS OF PICS)
i bought an Si head from the yard for $65
Then i tore apart the 1.3L Engine and the 1.5L Engine to compare them side by side to find the EXACT Difference
and ive figured out to turn a 1.3 into a 1.5 you just need the 1.5 head/crank, throw it into a Ev1 Block and u now have an Ew1!! with a bit more compression if you keep the ev1 pistons in there...
The cranks rod journals in the 1.3 are much thinner thats the only difference when it comes to the engine besides the 1.3 being an 8 valve head
i have also gotten my 3g Ready for paint

Re: 1986 Honda Civic DX 165k miles Engine Rebuild & more (LOTS OF PICS)
i wanted to paint it the original color, but because ive found some front end damage and the D/S strut tower isnt perfectly straight, i am just gonna, sand it down, repair the rusted spots, fill the dings, and paint the whole car Flat Black, put it back together and be done with it... keep it as a DD for a long time to come since i have a spare engine and Transmission, and MANY other extra parts ive accumulated, so why not keep it as a DD if its not gonna be any money out of pocket for repairs, just simply go to my Parts Box, pull out the part N replace..
Cant wait to finally get it on the road, ive owned it coming up close to 1 year and still have yet to put it on the road.... first thing im doing is eating my dads festiva for lunch.... im not one to brag, because its no racecar, but he thinks his A/T Festy is quick, he hasnt seen the 2nd gear hook ive got in the civic, just from the little test driving ive done, once i shift into 2nd, id be GONE!!.... then i can tell my dad "Quit Wasting ur time, buy a Honda"
but he plans on buying a M/T Aspire or Festiva and dropping a B6 DOHC in it which will be pretty ****in fast, i still cant get over how damn small they are inside, so i pass on owning one for myself.. not to say im a giant fatty, im just a big guy, so i feel like "fat Guy!! in a little Car" in chris farleys voice LMAO

my brother advised me to paint it Semi Gloss Black
I bought a CDM intake from another Rpr member, and i need to convert my carb adapter plate so i can run the Si head w/ the weber mounted on the CDM intake which should be BEAST.... especially if i bore it and use brown top pistons...

gucci_mane,
You still alive out there ?
I was just wondering . . . I know you took the whole engine out, but how hard would you guess it'd be to just remove the head and replace the head gasket.
I've done a lot of this kind of thing but I mean, you never know if xyz car has some really difficult manifolds to remove, and that kind of thing.
The engine's are small, so that helps.
Any thoughts ?
Thanks,

Projects came to a hault, i bought a 1998 dodge dakota for cheap, i just recently got back into working on vehicles and im full on right now, so im getting onto fixing some things, including my 1994 suzuki RF900 my uncle left me..
AS for changing the head gasket.... its relatively simple man.... the wiring you dont need to worry about, they can pretty much only go one way, the Head bolts need to go back in the same holes, and you need to clean the old head gasket residue off from the head and the block surface, I myself use the method some say NOT to use... Wirewheel... very effective, but you gotta keep it moving at all times, the key is to never sit in one place too long, you only want to remove the gasket material, its all in who you ask really.... Biggest deal is gonna be your timing belt, make sure you time it before putting the belt back on
Another Tip is... You can remove the head with the intake, then remove the intake off the head to make that work a little easier, but i take the intake off before the head

Oh man, I'm glad I asked but sorry to hear your story.
I really hope you're going to be ok. That's a whole different rebuild story you have on your hands. Jeeze - careful out there !
Thanks for your reply though.
I was wondering about things like you said :
"Another Tip is... You can remove the head with the intake, then remove the intake off the head to make that work a little easier, but i take the intake off before the head."
Indeed I was wondering if there was going to be anything uniquely difficult about removing the head on that car, or if there were any tricks like "You can remove the head with the intake."
It all sounds pretty doable.
Maybe I'm a bit out of line and shouldn't ask, and I don't mean to be facetious but . . . I always wondered what it'd feel like getting shot.
Yeh, I know - it hurts but, you know.
You can ignore the comment if desired. Couldn't help myself though.
Best of luck - be careful ! !
