Wanna hook up an Ipod to an older Panasonic head unit? Has 8pin DIN and cd-changer control plugs
Hey guys,
My friends bought me a Panasonic head unit for my del sol a couple years ago as an xmas gift (Panasonic CQ-C3300U, 2003) to play mp3 cds. I want to upgrade it by buying an Ipod nano and hooking it up to the head unit. I've done a little research on this. My head unit has:
RCA - Cd-changer input jacks
8 pin DIN - Cd-changer control jack
I also bought:
3.5mm ----> RCA adapter cord
I spoke with my cousin and a friend of mine (that works at best buy) and they told me, in order for my setup to work, I need to activate the "Cd-changer input" on the HU. In order to do that, i need to find out which pin on the 8pin DIN on the HU activates the "CD-Changer input". Then take a wire and connect it to that pin somehow. Then attatch a switch to that wire to turn it on/off. Then attach the other side of that wire to a power source (ie. cigarette lighter plug).
Does this sound about right?
The problem with my cousin's suggestion is that he said i would need to find the schematic for my panasonic head unit. I can't find any FREE ones anywhere online and i dont really feel like dropping $15 for a downloadable schematic. Is there any way of testing or maybe jumping each DIN connector to see which one activates the "CD-changer input?" Is there any risk to doing this?
I've been researching other setups to get an ipod to work on my Headunit (hardwire, no fm modulators). The closest thing i found is an adapter used for the OEM head unit (which also has an 8pin DIN connector). However my cousin pointed out that the pins might be arranged for different functions.
Thanx,
James

Your cousin & friend are on the right track, but without the specs (& schematic), you have no idea what voltage it takes to activate that input. And although you could start probing around with varying voltages, you risk frying the inputs to the amplifier...
I say make friends with someone at a repair center and see if you can get your hands on some more info....
Otherwise, get a wired FM modulator and hook it up that way... They don't sound as good as a direct input, but they're not that bad... Alot better sounding than most will say they do...
We use to put the wired mods in with the original SkyFi XM radios and they sounded pretty clean...

Re: (B18C_EJ8)
Thanx for your reply. I am a complete newb on this subject. I was able to find a schematic to my particular head unit. Any help of trying to make sense of this for me would be greatly appreciated.

Hope one works for you...
I'm assuming if it's the older one this is the one you need.
