kickers S12L5, sounds better in sealed or ported box?
hey guys,
is it the general consensus that kickers sound better (sound quality) in a ported box?
i've always thought a sealed box would always be better for sound quality...?
could someone provide me with some insights here? TIA -demitri

a sealed box will give a better all around sound, it will also provide a tighter bass. the ported box will definately be louder but it is much slopier sounding.

that's what i thought until i read a member's remark that it will sound "better" in a ported box, i guess what he meant by better was louder

Sound is relative... Are you building the box yourself? If so, I'd recommend sealed because it is easier to design and build properly IMO. Try that see how you like it, and if it doesn't meet your needs start experimenting with ported boxes.

buidling a ported box for L7s or L5s , or any kicker really is easy, just go to the kicker website and look around on the page your sub is on , near the bottom is a link, you can download a manual thing, its like 30 pages long, but it shows plans to build dif size and kinds of sealed and ported boxes specifically for that sub. hope that helped soem

Well peichie and top shotta are on the right track. Both boxes has good and bad
points about them...it all depends on what you want to accomplish.
Sealed: pros- smaller box, ease of construction, handles goobs of power.smooth
bass response (ie all freqs are played equally...no real peaks or umph)
cons- not as efficeint as a ported with same power applied.
Ported: pros-very efficient ( 3-6 db increase over a sealed box with same power applied)- translation: very sick bass
cons- harder to build ( less forgiving if you screw up...can create a huffer)
larger box that sealed, less power handling, has peaks in bass frequency.
It all depends on what you want....want to wow your pals... do a ported( if you have the space....the L5 12" feed with 500 watts with a subsonic filter @ 30hz 12db xover with rip your head off...trust me on this one ). If you have space issues
and you want a good all round thump...the sealed will do fine. Bass is good no matter how you slice it.
No go play nice.....

Prevents you from destroying your sub below the tuning frequency.
A ported box does not have to have bass peaks. It has better extension, which combined with the transfer function of a car is not needed. A ported box can shake your innards at 30hz For home use, you cannot beat ported. You can build a box with an f3 below 20hz with the right sub. You can do this for a car too
Off the subject I have always wondered why sealed subs seem to shake the car better than ported subs, even though the ported subs have higher spl.

Do you alread have an amp for your subs? There are many amps that come with subsonic filters from the factory. If not, AudioContol.com has quality stuff.
