Default How to wire an amp and sub to stock integra HU?

I have a kenwood kAC-829 amplifier and a pioneer sub I want to hook up to my integra. Right now I have a stock HU, but want a little bass in my system. I don't know anything when it comes to stereo electroincs, and I searched HT, Team-integra, and some other online places w/ no definate answer on how to wire them.
Could a stereo guru help me out and give me step by step instructions on how to do this?

What's this hi to low converter look like? When a shop wired an amp to my stock HU, they had to cut the speaker outputs and used PAC adapters to convert them to RCA's. Then again maybe my situation was different since I had to run all my speakers through the amp.

yeah theres different ways to run it, its a little easier if you amp has inputs for speakers...then you can you ues the output side and do without RCA's...i'd go with the other way, get an adapter that goes from the HU and turns into RCA outputs...either way will work fine...

Do you need a crossover for the sub?

I never had one, unless the amp has one built in to it, which I doubt. I could be wrong though.

Default Wiring Stock HU to Amp using Line Level Converter

AMP RCAS
Take your line level input converter and wire it as per its instructions. Usually this involves tapping onto your left and right rear speakers and connecting them to this converter and then connecting rcas to it and running them to your amp. You should not need long rca runs because your doing all this in the trunk.

Remote Wire
The remote wire will turn on your amp when your deck is on, there should be a wire for this located right at the deck but since its stock your going to have to goto the Power Antenna wire, which is YELLOW/GREEN and located at the back of the radio harness (have fun taking out the radio..make sure you get the screw/bolt thats holding it back by getting on your knees from the passanger side and reaching up the back with a screwdriver praying to god you'll find it)

Fuses and Power Wire
You need to run the wire through the firewall to the battery to get the proper amount of current to your amp, you would'nt want to supply it with the small stock wiring made for the radio would you?

Connect wire to battery, cut it within 12"-14" of battery terminal (safety!) and run it straight to the back.

There are plugs on the firewall you can pop out on the passanger and drivers side near the kickpanels that you can pass wire through. Just make sure you use grommets, or cut a hole in the plug run it through and replace the plug (remember water can get through this hole and the chaffing of the wire against your chassis could cause it to short!!)

So now you hopefully have ran the remote wire and the power wire on ONE side of
the car. This way if you ever upgrade your stock deck you can use the other side to pass down real rca's (hell...buy $18 rca cables and save yourself the time by doing it now to rough it in if you like)

Connect the rcas from the line converter to the amp, connect the power wire and remote wire to the amp, set your gains around half, ground the amp to a nice solid bold in the trunk (sand it, dielectric grease it and use ring terminals and washers..also make the wire run as short as possible while still remaining comfortably hooked to the amp)

Turn it on, and it should work. The only thing i cannot verify right now is if the power anntenna automatically goes DOWN when you switch to CD player on the stock unit, if it does, you cannot use the Yellow/Green from the radio harness but you'll have to use Yellow (accessory) from the ignition harness, convientnly located at the front of the fuse panel near the right hand side.

Enjoy

I have RCA's for the amp
but since there are speaker level inputs already on the amp, do I just tap into the rear speakers and connect them to the amp w/o using a hi to low converter?

And when I tap into the rear speakers, what gauge should I use? and should I just splice?

oh, if you already have speaker level line, you will not need a hi/lo connecter. Just splice into your rear speaker wiring, I'm not sure exactly how your speaker level line in's look (I've personally never used them...I'm not an installer, just an enthusiast), but you'd prob need to splice both the left and the right to get a stereo signal to the amp (although your sub should really be in mono)

Use whatever gauge you can find, 18 Should be great, anything bigger (ie. Lower gauge) is useless since it's Line level.

intalled sub and amp today, everything went good, except ran out of wire! other then that the only problem I have is my battery voltage dropping while the amp is on, from 13.8-9 to 12.0. What does this mean, new alternator? the car also sputters and dies sometimes now...

eww.. um, turn on your car, let it run, disconnect your positive battery terminal post at battery..

if your car dies; new alternator time or your belts may need adjusting.

other than that, I have no clue...that amp shouldn't be a heavy current load
