Honda Civic 95 Stock Radio/Stereo Removal
Hi all,
I've joined specifically to try and solve this problem, maybe the first of many problems as I try to show some TLC to my new(!) car.
I'm trying to remove the stock radio from my 95 Civic (should be easy right?).
It's all fine and dandy until the actual removal, i.e. I unscrew the 4 screws for the lower dash, disconnect the cig lighter, and remove the lower dash panel.
I can find an 8mm bolt and 2 additional screws on the underside of the stereo which I can take out, but even then the stereo seems to be bolted/screwed down by something else! I've seen that some owners say there are 2 8mm bolts. I can't find this fabled second 8mm screw.
(I've been using the Install Dr guide for it, checked several Youtube videos, and the first ten pages of Google Search)
Has Honda ever permanently fixed in their radios/stereos?
I'll try to post pictures if I can. Alas, it's nearing the end of the weekend and it's too dark when I finish work to do any meaningful work on it.
Any help or suggestions will be gratefully appreciated.
BeanieHat
For background (otherwise TL;DR)
***The radio was locked out because rainwater got onto the fusebox. I'm the third owner so can't get the code.
It's another issue that needs to be remedied - the bonnet seal is cracked and lets in water. I've used Blu-Tack to fill the gap for now lol.

Hello!
Thank you for responding!
I'll take pictures of the underside of the radio with the dash off on the coming weekend.
From what I do remember, there only appears to be a single 8mm screw at the end of the radio, right in the centre of it. This screw comes out easy.
On both sides of this screw, there should be a Philips screw but these are missing and appears to have something else filling the space instead. But I'd need to check again.
Just some background info, I'm in the UK if that has any bearing whatsoever.
I'll keep checking this thread and will update when I have photos!
Please keep checking this post otherwise!!!

See the two ovals in this picture? That is where you will find the two silver 8mm hex with phillips head screws. Remove the lower panel that has the cig lighter and look up towards the radio, this is what you will see.

Thank you MotoCARR and 93SiHatchguy!
I'll wake up nice and early to make the most of the natural light here, will take photos.
@ MotoCARR, your picture looks very familiar to my stereo setup. I'm feeling a lot more confident that this removal should be finished this weekend.
As an aside,
I've marked up your photo. From what I remember, there was some sort of hard/welder/solder type material in the small circle I've drawn and the corresponding green arrow off picture. I initially thought ese were screwholes that were fixed permanently. But again, will have to take a picture and re-inspect.

There was always a metal tab in the big green circle, it's kind of jammed between the back of the radio and the metal frame, not sure if this would be problem.

Hi,
Thanks for your marked up photos!
I'm afraid I can't see the long piece of metal at the back of the stereo, perhaps it's hidden by the housing the stereo is attached to? I've attached an abundance of photos
Pre-removal of the single 8mm hex screw i can see.

The green circles are where I thought I was meant to see some screws...
After removing the 8mm hex screw.

If there's another 8mm screw elsewhere, please do mark up my picture!

I've circled the metal tab I was talking about in the above posts.
Here's a different angle of the metal tab.
And this is a Sony radio I want to install instead of the stock radio. I had a horrible realization that the SOny radio has two plugs rather than the Honda's single plug...

Am I going to need to do some re-wiring?

(This project just got a tad more complicated...)
Really appreciate the responses so far, hopefully I'm moving in the right direction!

Yes you will definitely need a different plug harness. What you have there are VW plugs. The white connector that is within the green circle in your 2nd picture is your radio harness. You will need a part like Metra 70-1712 or Scosche HA02B

Re: Honda Civic 95 Stock Radio/Stereo Removal
I'm not seeing anywhere else that would keep the radio from coming out. Maybe the bracket changed between years or models if you aren't in the USA. What I would try doing is pushing "up" meaning towards the roof of the car on that metal bracket then try pulling the radio out. If you have a stock cassette player I usually stick my finger in there and pull lol

Hello again all!
Thanks for your replies and suggestions.
I'll have another look on the weekend (and try lol). I understand what you mean by pushing up on the underside of the radio to unsettle that 'metal tab'. If it's as easy as that, it's going to be really embarrassing.
I've had a look on Amazon.com, things are cheap! However, since I am across the 'pond', I know there will be import taxes and duties so I'm going to try and source the adapters over here!
Unfortunately, the largest car parts retailer here don't have the harness/adapter you guys have listed..
Is there a specific specification that I need?
I've just checked the cables plugged into the Sony stereo, and it's this one...
Halfords | Kenwood to ISO Car Audio Connector (amplified)
So I need a connecting harness of some sort to connect the Sony's cables to the car.
I've attached a list page of harnesses. Could I trouble someone to help me? Or tell me what I should be looking for?
Halfords | Stereo Fitting Accessories | ecp_product is "1"
Thanks in advance.
And thanks again for all your time!

Re: Honda Civic 95 Stock Radio/Stereo Removal
Hi all,
Thanks for the suggestions, I've ordered one and it has arrived today! I look forward to fitting it!
Quick question, again, on the removal. Honda stereos aren't known to require stereo keys to remove right?

Re: Honda Civic 95 Stock Radio/Stereo Removal
Hello again all,
I've tried to take the radio out again to no avail. I've pushed the radio "up", to dislodge the metal tab and then pulled on the radio to try and remove it. There has to be something else pinning it down.
Back to the drawing board! A couple of potential breakthrough points:
- the black housing for the stereo, does this come out? In the original marked up picture, with the hand reaching from underneath the radio to pull it out, the housing comes out with it. So, should I be doing this ?
Here's a pic showing where this black housing is screwed down.
4 x screws (one behind the cable)
I've also included a picture of the front of the radio. Maybe there's a specific way with this particular model.
Good news, the recommended cable clips into the Sony stereo!

These holes:
make me think you need these:
You can make something out of a wire coat hanger that might get the job done, but can surely get something at Halford's or whatever you have over there.
US radios definitely didn't have that, guess we should have asked for a pic from the get-go.

Thanks for getting back to me.
I'm thinking these. AHHH! It's taken a few weeks now!
I actually ripped off the left part of the radio interface when I was trying to pull the radio out!

Re: Honda Civic 95 Stock Radio/Stereo Removal
This is going to be my last post.... because I've done it!
spAdam - you were right indeed, I did need stereo release keys. I got them off Amazon for £1 / $1.50.
Thanks for everyone's ideas and suggestions, took me a while but we got there in the end!
I'm uploading pictures - maybe it will help other people with this particular car.
Stick in the keys, it doesn't have to go in far at all. I made that mistake of pushing it all the way in and it has no effect on unlocking the stereo. Infact, I think this photo shows the keys in pretty deeply!
This is why. The key only needs to go in a bit!
The single hex 6mm screw locks down the metal clip object, rotating around the rubber part of the radio. Anti-theft.
Remember to take out the cage for the stock radio, otherwise the new radio+cage won't fit.
After some fiddling around with all the excess wiring - finished!
Again, thanks for everyone's input and ideas!
For reference,
I got my keys from here.
Also, I didn't need the
http://www.halfords.com/sat-nav-audi...c2-09-4#/#tab2
the stock radio had them already!

Interesting, we definitely don't have that here in the USA. Yes we definitely should have asked that from the get go lol.
