Charging Stinger battery
Ok, hopefully some of you work in audio. I have the SP-800 Stinger battery and it died. They say I need a charger that can do 50A for 3+ hours. None of the auto stores around here know what kind of chargers they have. Stinger says a "Trickle" charger will not work and ruin the battery. I'm trying to find what kind of place has this charger, or if anyone has experience charging these batteries.

Re: Charging Stinger battery (ricodemus)
Nevermind, my buddy boostedcivicsir has a charger at his shop that can do it. Wheeee thanks Mikey!

Yes basically you need a charger that's capable of supplying a higher voltage than normal. It took me two weeks of charging to bring mine back to life after it sat for a year. Works great now though.

I wonder why not? The alternator should be able to provide more than 50 amps. I have never had to use a charger for a battery to get it back, but then there are always exceptions to everything.

Re: Charging Stinger battery (vteg)
It's because the voltage drops to low, around 8 volts. You need higher than 14 volts to bring it back to life. The internal resistance in the battery becomes so high that the 14 volts doesn't really do anything. You need a higher voltage so that you are actually passing some current into the battery.

Ok, that makes lots of sense. Normal dead batteries are in the 10 volt range. ESR would be a bitch at 8 volts I did not know deep cycles got down that low.

It may have been close to 9 but still in the 8's. I just remember it being way below 10. It sat for a year unused. The stinger battery is a dry cell. Its a great battery IMO and worth the money.
