will I just installed a 15' l7 08 in my car and it smells bad. The smell is coming from the sub y is this? is it cause it was new?

break in period. do it right too. not supposed to turn it all the way up for a period of time.

yea i didnt for a long time when it was in my basement. But now in my car i can smell it really bad. I guess need more break in?

Shouldnt smell burning, I would take the sub out just make sure you dont have anything cooking, if not than brake in, but it shuldnt smell to the point of burning.

i know for a fact wiring is correct. i triple checked it b4 i screw it in. I hate square box, you can only open it up so much then its a goner. I ask a friend and he is a kicker fan, he said when it is pushed it will eventually smell.

My guess is you are underpowered and driving amp into constant clipping resulting in poor SQ and a overheating, [burning] VCs.

So questions...

Which Kicker L15, DVC 2 or 4 ohm?

Make and model of amp driving the L15?

What is the internal volume of the sub box?
Is it a custom or pre-built box? 94

will i have a jl 1000/1 powering it in a box (35hz i believe)
0 gauge wires if it matters and stinger rca
its a 0815l7 2ohms, i wired it only one side of the sub. (the ones with the dot)

edit: might be 32hz instead.

Yeah you cooked the sub or rather toasted the coils.

On a DUAL VOICE COIL SUB WOOFER it is IMPERATIVE that
both coils be connected (in series or parallel wiring configuration) or damage will occur.

The 2nd coil is not a "spare" coil (yes someone told me that) it is needed to make the sub
work properly. So for review:

Both coils must be utilized or very bad things will happen..

will its not f* up. It still bangs hard like new but it smells so i stopped. Even and low vol it smells.
I always thought that the other sides are for changing ohms. So since the jl can do 1-4 ohms stable i just hooked up one side. When I first got it i wired both sides up but i changed it because it seems hard on the sub.

Yeah it is FRAKED....sorry to be the bearer of bad news (and the BSG reference).
One of the coils is "springy" and will fail very soon.
"Burning smells" is never a good thing in car audio especially with sub woofers.

The JL is designed to handle 1 ohm (albeit with less control over sub)
Hope you bought that sub from a dealer (though toasting a coil like that isn't really
covered under warranty). Funny thing was that the power you were feeding it,was its RMS power (depending on box design)

I guess I'll just hook it up "both side" and hope it dont blow in the quickness. It was PITA just to put the box in the trunk.

At this point you ar overpowering the sub, 1000W RMS into a 500W VC, you need both VCs for the sub to be a 1000W sub, and as mentioned both VCs must be used, wire the VCs in series for a 4 ohm load, JL Audio slash series amps are stable between 1.5 and 4 ohms, they are NOT stable a 1 ohm so do not wire the VCs in parallel. 94

No, that would be a parallel connection, in series you would connect the pos.(+) of one VC to the neg.(-) of the other VC, that will leave you with a pos.(+), [off one VC] and a neg.(-), [off other VC] to connect the the amp, or sub box terminal cup.

You can run a single voice coil on a dual voice coil sub but the power rating will be half. I don't know what the power rating of that sub is but it sounds like you over powered the sub and burnt up one coil. Warranties usually do not cover fried coils. Expensive lesson make sure you never make the same mistake twice.

Make sure you pay attention to polarity. Reading your previous comment about hooking both up and being hard on the sub makes me think you had one coil hooked up incorrectly. If this occurs the two coils will fight each other and will also result in reduced power handling. You have nothing to lose sounds as though you already toasted it
