just wondering if anybody has tried to put 6X9's for rear speakers instead of 6.5's in their CRX. i just wanted to know because i would like some nice bass but i don't want subs becasue i want to use my trunk area. if anybody has done this or has any info then thanks, isaac.

remove the metal speaker bracket in back, and trim material away with a dremel tool until the speaker fits. screw it in with some wood screws and you are set. the speaker will sit on a diagonal, and the cover will clear it.

if I were u I would get 8" mid-bass drivers (3-ways).
6x9''s distort because of their oblong shape. it would also be easier to cut the 8" holes out.

yeah i would go with the 8's as wel.
but yes i do have 6by9's in my car work ok. i did not cut my **** out, just putt them in with the top in side the bottom out side with one wood screw and at the top a zip tie.
but now since the guy above said 8" bass things, i am all down for that, since i have no subs thanx.

NP. Although if you don't actually mount your speakers on some type of baffle (solid sealed surface) you are going to get a lot of delay distortion and really not that much bass which would defeat the purpose of putting the 6x9"s in there in the first place. When a speaker creates a sound it fires out, then as the speaker travels back in, it fires back also (this is why you can turn a speaker around backwards and still hear the mids/bass). the speaker firing backwards is going to interfere with the front firing sound creating somewhat of a reverberation or echo.
not sealing off a speaker and seperating the front and rear firing sound waves seriously decreases the bass output of any given speaker.
I would reccomend going to home depot and getting a thin piece of wood (a composite wood made of small air-less particles, take your pick) and using a jigsaw to cut it to size. you could also use fiberglass if you are good with it.

I know of a few people that actually cut the rear divider to put 6x9's in that thing but they were also the ones that were buying them from my parts cars to get rid if the holes they cut.

i have them in my rex (6x9's that is). i took out the mounting plate and cut with a dremel. then, to make it have a rich sound, i fiberglassed a little enclosure behind each one so that its close to air tight. it sounds a LOT better than stock. sorry, no pics, but they pretty much just set in there, its a tight fit.

Please Post pics of your 6x9 rear speakers. I am interested in the mounting setup.

I plan on doing this, and using fiberglass to fill the gaps and seperate the front and rear sound waves. ( I like this idea because it is cheaper than "JDM CRX BASS TUBES")

Yes, I realize that this is a 4 year old post, I just didnt see the point of creating a new post.

I just put in the 6.5's front and rear and I got a 8" powered bazooka tube for $100 at Circut City for the trunk. It doesn't take up alot of space either. It is 16" x 9"
If you like to hear bass then this is the way to go. You will not get enough bass from 6x9's at least for my tastes.

I got the 100 bazooka tube also just mounted it behind the rear seat, it adds the perfect bass and is very light weight.

I got the $30 ebay bazooka tube (new) and a $45 ebay Sony 1400 watt amp to power it and it is good tight bass that complements music, not cover it up and annoy everyone around you. Also 6.5 all the way around and it is great sounding for such a little car. With my tube inside a box i made with a traingular pattern and my amp on the side, i have about 2/3 of my rear cargo area left and i made the box bigger than needed. It also allows me to cover up the whole setup underneath the cargo cover so thieves see nothing at all back there.

Box on right side, aimed towards back as per Bazooka's instructions

I actually install car audio systems for about 4 yrs now while i go to school. Currently I have an old 4ch. amp and a Rockford 300w Amp powering a JL audio 12" Sub in a tube. Sounds great in a CRX.

My idea is that if i install some 6x9 in the rear and fibergalss an enclosure for them that I will be happy enough with the sound to ditch the sub and Amp. I get deals because of where I work, and just thinking about it, so Id like to see some people's setups. Maybe its just a waste of my time??? idk

If you get deals, then why not try it with a really good 6.5" woofer/midbass.

Not knocking your idea, I am just not very big on high frequencies right behind my head.

Good luck with what ever you chose and post pics of the work.

I have good PPI 6 3/4" speakers in the rear but I really dont get rich mid-low frequencies. (And this is with a 4ch amp)

Fair enough, there is no enclosure for the rear 6 3/4" now but I figure if I am going to build an enclosure, I might as well build one for a 6x9 right???

I would like to see some 6x9 setups and hear some feedback from people that own a similar setup.

But the 6.75" PPI's will probably sound great in an enclosure. There isn't really much difference in cone area. Why not just build it for what is there instead of spending more for 6x9's??( even if you get them for a steal )

Place some 6.5 inch component speakers in their.

My 89 CRX had;
6.5" components in the rear factory location
put the tweets in the usual upper door area, or hide them higher in the door pillar
mount the crossovers under the front center console

then some nice 6.5" 3 ways in the factory door location and a descent deck.

While I do not doubt that to give you a better sounding stereo, it still does little about bass/midbass response. Simply being it doesn't account for seperating the front and rear soundwaves cancelling around the factory mounting plate.

Without an enclosure, the rear mounting plates do little but hold a speaker in an opening. Remember sound systems are probably 35% equipment and 65% instalation at least. Simply sealing off all the gaps around the mounting surface will drastically help, but there are tons of places where it is not sealed wich allow for cancellation.

I should post pics of the way my 6x9 are mounted in the stock location.. using only zip ties.. which has worked for about 2 years with no problems.

So 6.5's with an enclosure would sound better than 6x9s with a mounting board only, right?

I would say yes. The enclosure would be prefered over just a mounting board. If you could get an enclosure similar in size to the jdm bass tubes or larger, then I would expect the midbass to really improve.

A mounting board that effectively seperates the front and back waves of the speaker would still be better than the factory mounting plates.

A 6x9" would theoretically have more cone surface than a 6.5", but not much...so all things being equal performance would be similar.

Neither one of the options in this thread will really supply the output of a dedicated subwoofer, but could create a very pleasing and suprising output.

Assuming they are both enclosed/ported properly, you will get more bass from a 6x9 than a 6.5 because the larger area of the cone enables the speaker to move more air. (This obviously does not come close to a 12" sub and a box of several cubic feet)

So.... If I am going to fiberglass an enclosure for rear speakers, why would I want to limit myself to 6.5???? (Besides if i wanted an enclosure for 6.5, I would just buy the fiberglass replicas of the JDM Bass Tubes.)

So, I would like to make a ported enclosure for some 6x9 and I would like to see pics of how some of you have mounted the 6x9 in your cars. thanks

Here is a list of fairly affordable drivers you could try( if you want ):

5.25" http://www.partsexpress.com/pe...4-831
6.5" http://www.partsexpress.com/pe...4-832
6x9" http://www.partsexpress.com/pe...4-837
6x9" http://www.partsexpress.com/pe...4-864

I am soon going to install a set of the 5.25" for midbass somewhere in my crx.

The tang bands seem to get decent revues and are generally considered a good value.

Anyone have any pics of 6x9 mounted in the rear of their CRX???

I ended up creating an enclosure for my 6.5 which helped a lot.
