Just trying to put together a CHEAP simple system. Just planning on getting a head unit, and speakers. No amp, tweeters, or sub.

I know 6.5" speakers are stock in Integras, but will 5.25" fit better in the fronts? Or should I just ditch those black surround things and run 6.5" in the front?

Here's the cheap 6.5" speakers I'm considering...

Go to Best Buy or wherever, and LISTEN to the choices they have.

Then, buy whichever speakers YOU think sound good....

And as far as fitting 5 1/4's into a 6 1/2" hole, you can do it by making some rings out of MDF...

I agree with B18C_EJ8 the speakers you should get are the ones you like the sound of, I have 4 6.5" Eclipse 2ways in my 94 LS, they were a direct fit into the stock speaker mounts, [the stock mounts have since been replaced] and although unless I hadn't gotten them for free, I probably would not have installed them, but am now satisfied with the sound, [after replacing the stock speaker mounts with custom MDF ones]

As you said a "standard" 6.5" speaker is what fits in the stock location, [speaker depth is an issue] a 5.25" speaker will also fit, in fact once you remove the stock speaker, [3 screws] you will see the 4 screw hole mounts for a 5.25" speaker, one of the problems you may run into mounting a 5.25" speaker, [other then depth] is a 5.25" speaker, [depending on brand] may not be big enough, [diameter] to give it an airtight seal around the outside edge. [very important] so as B18C_EJ8 suggests an adpt./spacer, [made out of MDF] can be made with an outside diameter the same as the stock speaker mount and a hole the same as the speakers mounting diameter, it can also be made, [depending on speaker] up to an inch thick and used as a depth reducer, [if depth of speaker is more then 1 7.8" if I remember right] a "depth reducer" could also be used on a 6.5" speaker if it was too deep for the stock speaker mount, or if the 6.5" speaker has a mounting diameter bigger then the stock speaker mount, [a common problem].

That all said, why not hold off on getting speakers, unless there is something wrong with the stock ones, you will be surprised at how the sound with an aftermarket HU driving them, then if you want to upgrade, start by installing a set of 6.5" in the front. 94

That's a pretty general answer that can pretty much apply to any post about advice here.

Anyhow, I've tried that, but it's hard to find a place that has all three. I sampled the speakers, but it's hard to compare them when you hear them at different stores and different days. And most of the time, the way it sounds in-store, is different from how it would sound in my car.

Thanks for the MDF idea. If I go 5.24", I'll definitely try that.

I don't think you can get a true sense of what the thing will sound like IN YOUR CAR unless you are sitting in the same exact car with the same head unit / speaker combination you are looking into. Speaking of 5-1/4", you aren't going to get much midbass out of that. I would avoid "shallow depth" speakers - lousy sound... look at how much room the cone has to actually move... you can get a sense of how much midbass you'll get out of em. I had tried out 3 different sets of front speakers (Pioneer, Crystal and Alpine) and none of them fit. Ended up getting a set of Focal separates for hella cheap. Took that useless plastic speaker basket out. Then made a speaker ring 1/2" thick out of HDF... then made a speaker mounting panel out of the 1/4" HDF... spray painted it black. It fits like a charm. The Focals I'm using aren't "low profile" but they fit fine behind the removable front speaker grill.

I just got the brand new Infinity Reference 6.5" in front and 6x9" in rear in my CB7 and they sound unbelievable. I'm not into subs and tons of bass, I'm in to overall quality and these are fantastic. My 6.5" Reference's aren't 2-ways though, they're seperates but nonetheless they're great.

One nice thing about the 6.5" seperates and the 6x9 reference series is that the cones are designed to travel further so they produce more bass for their surface area. Not only that, they have some big freakin' magnets!

Just power them correctly (not off the deck) and you'll be lovin' life.

I agree with everyone one hear. What you hear in the shop is not what you are going to hear in your car. The acoustic is diffrent and so is the cabin gain. I would stay with 6.5 because you will can alittle more bass responce then with 5.25. Also put a little dynomatt on the doors to help out. I sell the xtc baffels at my shop and they work really great. I have tried tuneing them to buy putting ports in them. It really helps on some speakers. Plus it keeps the dirt and moisture out of the speaker which makes them last longer.
