Default The re-build of my ep3 thread!

I wasn't going to make a build thread on this site but i figured why not....so on with it then!!

well i was going to wait until i had a good amount of parts collected before i started this thread but seeing how i have nothing to do at work since the volumes are so low for some reason, i'm bored and need something to do, so here it goes...(will post pics later)

I had originally wanted to do a k24 build since i was so close to doing it last time, when i had the rsx...but i started reading a bunch of threads on k20a and ephatch and clubep3 that i decided to just keep the build at 2.0 liter instead of the 2.4, something i may regret in the future but whatevs, you live, you learn...

Upon learning that the k20a3 crank is not forged or balanced from factory like most of the crankshafts in the k20 family, i set out to find a crank, unfortunately to my surprise people wanted like $2-300 just for the crank...luckily with the help of craigslist, i found someone semi local that had a k20z3 short block for $150, the kid i bought it from said he thought the piston rings were bad but i could tell when i got there the scarring on the cylinder wall was more then just piston rings, i bought i anyway with hopes of the crankshaft being in good shape...It is in excellent shape after tearing the short block apart...cannot say thing same thing for cylinder 4 however, upon dis-assembly we found the piston in cylinder 4 had a huge hole in it and basically rendered that block useless to me unless i was going to sleeve it.

pic for reference...

k20a2 top

k20a3 bottom

so next thing to find out was how to get rid of shitty 1-lobe vtec and switch to 3-lobe vtec using the a3 head...it was actually pretty simple after conversing with D-Rob of Innovative-Motorworks, he had told me i need to get the k20a2 rocker assembly, luckily someone on k20a was willing to separate the head they were selling and sell me the rocker assembly, so 1 more thing of the list.

so with the new found information, i did some more research and found out the cast of the k20a3 and a2 blocks were nearly the same except for the oil cooler and oil squirters on the a2, which you dont really need the oil squirters if you plan to swap to forged pistons, which i do, lol. I plan to use eagle h beams paired with wiseco pistons in 11.7:1, possibly 12.4:1...still toying with idea of turboing a few years down the line so not sure if i want to stay below 12 or not...

as for the oil cooler conversion, i used k20a.org for most of my information sourcing...this shows you how to use the a2 water pump and oil cooler on an k24 or k20a3 block, without needing to tap a hole in the block for the coolant passage.

http://www.k20a.org/forum/showthread.php?t=81339

The head and 3-lobe vtec, now that i have the a2 rocker assembly, i've decided to do a 3 angle port n polish to the head for a lil better air flow on the a3 head, once completed...i plan to use ferrera valves, supertech dual spring and ti retainer...as for cams, another thing i consulted D-Rob of Innovative-Motorworks, for, i was originally going back and forth between two cam choices, skunk2 pro 2's and prayoonto stage 2's...ive decided on the prayoonto's after speaking with D-Rob.

After speaking to Shaun Quickel of QCP Gear we decided to do some minor changes to the ep3 trans, 5.09 final drive, replacement of 2nd gear n synchros, and an 08 accord 5th gear.

some pics of what i have gathered...and breakdown of the short block

crank is in great shape:

the partially grenaded piston:

#4 cylinder wall:

k20a2 rocker assembly with cam caps and cam sensors:

k20a2 oil cooler:

did my tax return over the weekend, got a few weeks to wait for it...plan on getting the bulk of what i need to start the parts switch...i.e....pistons/rods, bearings, headstuds, kpro, cams, valvetrain, oil pump stuff...ill just need intake manifold and a header and exhaust and ill be set...

aight, so we pulled the motor out on Tuesday of last week, over the course of the week after work i managed to get the whole motor torn apart, everything will be de-greased and sprayed down by way of pressure washer to try and get as much dirt and grime off the block as i can...next week the head, block,sub-block and z3 crank will be dropped at the machine shop, for re-honing of the block and the crank will get micro polished, possibly knife-edged...the head will just be cleaned since everything is in good condition i don't see a need for the 3-angle valve job...

some pics:

bearing were starting to spin. Glad i let it sit and didnt drive it or this may have been worse..

some pics of the parts back from machine shop:

supertech dual springs and Ti-retainers received with 7 degree keepers, just waiting on valves to show up and then the head can be assembled..

ferrea flat faced valves showed up today...just need some seals and we're ready for head assembly!!

wasn't part of my original build plan but it kind of fell in my lap and I coulebt say no...traded a friend my 5spd trans for his mint type-s trans with 30k on it plus some cash...also just ordered rods/pistons/head gasket and head studs...

so headstuds and head gasket showed up yesterday, just waiting for rods and pistons for the rest of the motor parts...next month will be clutch, header, exhaust, kpro and rbc...then were ready to put it all back together!!

hooray! pistons and rods arrived yesterday!

Eagle h-beams and Mahle 12.7:1 pistons!

realize i haven't updated this in forever, but i was able to finally order the remaining parts i needed to finish the build, **** is hard to do when you're paying for everything in cash and not credit cards or mommy and daddy funds lol! so i was able to order my header, exhaust, clutch, oil pump conversion, motor mounts, timimng chain tensioner and timing chain!

with that stuff ordered, i went ahead and put the bottom end together for the most part!

Muffler showed up today for the exhaust, 3" magnaflow, going to add a piece of stainless on the end of it so itll turn down

put the headlights in.....

and managed to put the motor in, top entrance transplant, I know not many people use this route because the bottom is so much easier but top entrance can be done!
