my project
here's my 88dx hatch i'm getting ready to fix up. the car has needed paint since i bought it on ebay in july 2002. The car has never been garaged so i've been holding off on cosmetic stuff. the car spent it's first 14 years in oakland, california and the next 3 years in las vegas, nevada. Then once in florida the morning dew really sped up the oxidation process. I could see the water boiling off the roof and i knew it was time to do something. I'll have a garage in 10 days so I decided to begin my project. It's getting new paint, new headlights, new si rear seats, std. rear garnish, new bumpers and new trim for the door to start off. also decided i need new 89si door panels and new capet as well.

here's what the car looks like as of this morning.
I spent about $70 so far on por-15, wirewheels, sandpaper and primer. All work was done by myself in the parking lot of my apts. The car will be repainted the oem color of b35m in my carage. After the paint is done the motor will get some attention.
I like taking pics so i'll update the thread as i progress.

update-last night i pulled the upper door hinges, removed all the rust, coated the frame and doors hinge with por-15. Let it dry overnight and applied primer this morning. reinstalled the upper hinges and did the same to the lower ones. Now the doors don't shut properly so i'll have to realign them tomorrow. while the fenders and bumper were removed i removed all the rust from the fenders and bulkhead.

after some simple green and high pressure water she looked good.
Lined up the mark on the hinge with the mark on the frame. done with the passenger door in two minutes.
the other side took two hours. broke one of the heads of the bolts during the process. Five minutes later the broken bolt was removed and the door was aligned. Torqued the bolts down and primered the bolts.
removed the trim from the fenders, pressure washed the fenders, found more rust on the fenders so i removed it and coated those spots with por-15.
removed the windshield wipers and the plastic underneath. Found a more surface rust and cleaned it up. It began to get dark so i had to cleanup and call it a day.

Damn, talk about commitment. Can't wait to see the end result. I'm sure it will be better than pics could ever show though. My hat is off.

It's a rust preventive paint that chemically bonds to metal and prevents rust from coming back.

the front fenders are back on. used washers to get the hood and fender lined up. Pulled the rear bumper and bumper support. Found more rust.
Also found out that the car has been hit in the back in both corners
After i clean up the rear end and fix the rust that's it until i get the garage.
Car will finally be garaged on tuesday

Wow reminds me of the old days when I was restoring VWs. Taking a tired old car and bringing it back to life on your own is a great accomplishment and well worth it in the end. Don't cut corners and take care of any problems you find, don't hide them. Fixing it right the first time is always the way to go. Looking forward to seeing the end product. Good luck.

I knew the L rear had been hit, but this was a surprise. removed all the rust and coated it with por-15. still need to fill a couple dents on the exterior and then it's on to the interior.
Started to clean up the interior, after removing the plastic in the hatch i found some oddlooking seam sealer in the corner. Decided i need to remove the interior, clean it up and go from there. I plan to get rid of that old car smell and eliminate or reduce rattles in the process.

nice project. I need to tackle the rust spots on my rex. once I get my truck I'm looking at and have something else to drive I'll tare it apart and repaint the entire car.
