DIYMIKE EF BUILD: Here is my canvas, let me paint you a picture........
It's been over a year since i had my 1990 Civic DX hatch. Finally its time for me to build my dream car the way i finally want it. After putting it together once before with only ideas of making an average daily driver, i now come to the conclusion of making myself a car that i love and a car that will be far better then a new generation honda and Cheaper!
I received this car for $500.
let me shut up and show you the progression.
The B18B came with it and was parted out...I made my $500 back!
the body was in fair condition..considering i got this in the midwest and no rust
notice the double exhaust cut out. almost painful to see
Then i took it apart..
Then i did a ghetto flat black rattle can job on the engine bay
All the while i had bought this parts car to complete my car. $425 shipping was 250 though!
I did a little wire tuck action here
Then i was done..for the time being
as you can see, didn't really put any serious money into it
At this point, i was content. but the mini me i put in started to smoke at high rpm's. i mean i could of drove it. BUT i got inspired to get a jdm front and if i am going to get a JDM front.... i might as well decided to paint the car over agian while i am at it. so i went ebay hunting
started to take it apart again
i started to do some bodywork here and there. i have no experience in body work..but it was pretty easy...it just takes patience.
Chaos in my room
after the motor was removed
living room
At this point i was able to peice together a complete JDM front end with an exception of the Hood. i wanted a carbon fiber one but when the total came up to 650 shipped i wasnt to happy. then i thought wait a complete jdm front end from a importer sells them for 700. why not just buy one and sell the other parts i dont need. i called Hmotorsonline and Steve picked up. I asked him if he had some ef9 front ends and he said yeah but I also have a Brand New One in stock! I thought for a second and said "wait you have a brand new one from japan in?" and he said "yeah in Honda boxes"......then i said how much? he said 1300. then i dropped the credit card number. now some of you might be thinking thats alot of money....well it is. but i thought I have never seen somebody sell one of these..This is a chance of a life time! haha yeah i know an impulse buy but hey when this came in.....
I had the Biggest smile on my face...
I actually sold all the used ef9 parts and made a good chunk of change....
I didn't want to neglect the motor either
picked up a rear bumper.. took off the lip and rear fog lights to get it ready for paint...
the Shell was sent to paint and i found a storage place to work on my car... and now i am just waiting........

4/13/2007
I took the car for a spin in the storage unit place.
it was nice. it was the first time i drove my car in like 7 months.
still not done as you can see.
something i did notice was that the car would hum when i would put the car in gear.
i installed a exedy stage 1 clutch. did anybody ever had that problem. the humming goes away when i start to drive but when i put it in gear and its in neutral it hums
well any way here some pictures
I just want to remind you guys that:
it hasn't been buffed yet
i am going to get it buffed then i am going to install the new mouldings i bought.
4/28/07
Here is an update.
i know its been awhile.
i had to get an alignment and put together some random things.
i have been driving it for over a hundred miles.
i have to bleed the brakes. it seems that the brakes are uneven, it shakes when i apply the brakes slowly. Plus i felt the brakes on one side and its hotter then the other side.
i bleed the brakes like crazy but when i put the new master cylinder in, i didn't bench bleed it.
also my steering wheel shakes a little. you can hardly feel it but i know its there.
i think its the steering rack bushings. i ordered some prothane ones.
-Plus another problem i found is that the idle surges. the Type r head doesn't have the bleed valve. so i tried to do it manually but i don't know if i did it at all right.
it might be the ivac but my car runs fine its just annoying! LOL but it only does it some times.
other then that the car is really fun to drive
here are some pictures
My future plans:
-New steering wheel!
-get new suspension, i am on H&R's and some kyb but the car needs to be dumped some more.
-put on my password JDM lip.
-fix the idle
-fix the steering wheel shaking
-buff the car
- then finally put on the new moldings i bought.
Still going to have more updates.
if you have any w\questions let me know i can help you out.
UPDATE 5/1/07
Got the lip installed. its a password jdm one. they don't have anymore carbon ones but the fiberglass one will do. it weighs close to nothing. it felt like it would break in my hands, very thin and flimsy. i had to sand it down and respray it. its alright for the price.
the final pic

nope but it doesn't effect the cars driving or performance. i'll probably get another tranny or get this one rebuilt.
going 65 mph and having your tach at 4k is annoying. i'll probably install a LS 5th gear.

i'll give you my exact price.
i got the battery from
http://www.Portablepower.com
battery p680- 76.95
brass top terminals 10.95
black powdercoated aluminum jacket 34.95
shipping was 10.77
for a total of 133.62
this is the cheapest place i found those batteries for. they kill passwordJDM on prices.
the wire i just got from a friend.
the monstercable battery terminals were 8.99 each from ebay a while back.
and i got a grounding foot for like 11.00 bucks on ebay. the ebay prices didn't include shipping.
I forgot to mention that i got 80% of the parts from this car from EBAY.
