Default What gas stations carry the best 91-93octane gas

So I always wonder which gas stations carry the best 93 or 91 octane gas. I have talked to the people at stewarts here in NY and they say all the gas stations pick up the tankers down in Albany at the port, but there has to be some difference and along with the tanks at the gas station they sit in.

I was told its best to fill up at a place that has alot of business so the gas isnt sitting forever down in the tanks. I talked to a guy filling the tanks up one day and he said they have to use that stick with some sort of gel to check the water in the gas cause of condinsation but that it doesn't even tell the truth cause of some issue.

Anyway's I always fill up with 93 from a local busy Sunco or Stewarts. I had put 92 in from a getty mart and i burned threw a tank of gas quicker then normal. I'd like to do a rough compairson in mileage and see how big of a difference there really is one week.

Where does everyone else fill up and what's your thoughts on gas?

Shell, only 3% ethanol. I will drive miles out of the way just to use their gas. Best gas mileage and cleanest fuel.

Well I work at a gas station so I come to think I know a little bit about gas delieveries and gas tanks. If you go to a major gas station, like a chain retail part not always the banner on the gas part it self they will most likely be pretty good. On our tanks we have a sensor that detects if there is water in the tank and if so how much and in 4 years I don't think I've ever seen any. And yes all your gas in a certain area comes from the same exact place. The only diffrence are a gallon of additives they might put into the thousands of gallons they get that day. And its mostly just in the super gas reg. Is baiscly all the same from store to store. But yes like someone already said the best is to go to a busy gas station since they go through a lot of gas and don't worry about if the truck is filling up the tank that is what the filter on the pumps are for and those work very well.

Again though ethanol content varies greatly from station/brand. Racetrack showed 14% ethanol! Mind you the pumps say 10% or less. Shell was at 3%, Sunoco was at 4% IIRC. Both had the least amount out of all the brands. Now there are stations without ethanol at all and those are hard to find and do cost more but it pays off because of the better MPG.

Gas every where near me has 10% ethanol. I think when the gas stations have a load of gas coming it comes from different sources but all from the same major port in Albany. Some may be cheaper and not as good of quality compaired to say Sunco gas which is more expensive.

I don't think are tanks have a sensor, but i could be wrong ill have to talk to the guy next time i see them filling up the tanks.

Gas here in NY is so damn expensive i was paying $4.39gallon but now its down to $4.29 I wish we had a shell around here or some place that sells the same fuel as shell

just never ever get gas from like a walmart or somewhere that doesnt have a brand name to it. i work at an acura dealership and u should see some of the crap we pull outta tanks because the car wont run. everytime they got it at 1 of those places.

like 5 years ago i read an article where a magazine group (like interlink publishing) got gas samples from at least 5 different stations from the top chains in 20 different cities. Shell had the cleanest/best gas followed by sunoco and cheveron. i dont remember who came after that.

Yes.

For example, we have four major gasoline refineries up here in northern WA. Two primarily ship product to the S.W. (CA/AZ/NV), the other two distribute to the N.W. The two that primarily distribute locally are B.P. and Shell. Fuel companies will often 'trade' with eachother, in the sense that it is cheaper to outsource the distribution of fuel even if it is a competitor’s fuel, than it is to send a tanker/train to a fuel depot 1,500-3,000 miles away.

The only difference is the post-refinery blending of additives and ethanol. Even those formulations can only vary by so much due to EPA regulations, it almost makes no difference. MTBE is on its way out, Ethanol is being added to replace it, but there are still set minimums and maximums for each additive.

The price differences are due to different brand strategies, nothing more. BP markets towards price conscious consumers by encouraging cash payments. By passing on the CC/Debit Card fees to the consumer “by choice”, grants them a few cents per gallon savings. Also, AM/PM is a huge money-maker for BP (BP owns Arco). The cash-only incentive usually forces consumers inside the AM/PM to pre-pay, which translates into higher food/snack revenues compared to other fuel brands.

COSTCO and other wholesalers typically do not make any money on fuel sales, only enough to pay for the infrastructure and recurring maintenance/certification costs. They price the fuel lower to encourage more memberships (COSTCO) or in-store sales (Safeway, WalMart, etc).

My car always fueled by Shell or American Aviation even when the gas sat for a year and was drained then filled again I pulled the pump cover off and it was spotless inside! Not a grain of sand was on the bottom. BTW the pumps say 10% or less ethanol but check the ethanol content yourself... you would be surprised.

is there really a way to check the ethanol level yourself? only recently like in the last two months have we had access to 93 octane. two stations way out east in the city. the rest has 91oct. we only have one "e85" station that actually tested out to be like 70e. iirc.

Yep go online and order an ethanol test kit. It is really easy to do. Basically you separate the ethanol since it attracts water and it gives you a percentage.

so bottom line is, depending on where you stay at, majority of the gas are the same? just varies on the amount of additives added?

I have always been told Shell and BP were best but I know I have seen different with my EVOs. That's the only cars I have had that I tune on a knock sensor and my cars would always pick up a bunch of knock and start pulling timing on Shell especially. I've noticed it on every evo I ever tuned. If I put cheap *** Speedway (Marathon) or Gas America **** in there the car runs great and doesn't switch to my "**** gas" map. I never get any knock on Sunoco either. It seems consistent.

25psi + spraying 150 shot on Gas America poo gas!!!

As I've said before all areas get there gas from the same place the only difference would be either the additives they add google tier 1 gas and how long it sits in the gas tank.

Don't they buy from different parts of the tank?

yeah they say that the right side is best, maybe CT is different or something since basically everything comes out of new haven, but I've never had bad gas, i've had my car sit for almost 2 years and guess what it started right back up like it never missed a beat, (once the battery was charged) I fill up anywhere from 2 to 3 times per week and i'm not picky with my gas stations either just go with w.e. is cheaper that day. But if you get bad gas I really think its just a freak thing

http://www.toptiergas.com/retailers.html

thats why shell is "one of the best" but really its just a few gallon additives they put into the thousands of gallons they get, my gas station gets about 3000 gallons of regular and 1000 of super ever few days (even though we should get more since we are the last gas station before a race track and they would rather pay 4 something a gallon instead of 8 something haha) but yeah alot of Porsche, Ferrari, Aston Martian, BMW ext ext ext, you name a exotic car I've seen it getting gas at my work and none of them have blown up to my knowledge because of our gas. Ooo yeah were a shell so i guess since were tier 1 gas but i don't believe that little additives really do that much its mostly just deposits and really when your racing your motor is hot where it won't get them correct?

Also something else i thought of each Gas station prolly has different tank setups for holding of gas, which if some place has a shitty tank it is possible for there to be more water in the tank then other stations.

Just something to think about. I know alot of gas stations around here have been replacing there holding tanks, maybe to hold more gas or maybe for issues with the gas..

Gas is gas octane is octane. I buy my gas from where ever I always have and I have never had any issues. I normally get gas at the Volero gas station near me because it is low cost and close to me. They had 91 octane for the price of 87 for like 3 weeks and I loved it, 91 at $3.76 a gallon. I live in Arizona so 91 is the best we have, years ago we had 92 but for one reason or another all stations changed to 91.
If a gas is rated at 91 octane that is a rating for resistance to burning the higher the octane rating the harder it is to burn the fuel. 87 burns much easier and at a lower temp than 100 octane. Different gas stations all market their products as being the best for this reason or that reason. Chevron claims that their gas cleans the engine and valves as it burns. I repair cars for a living and trust me none of these cleaning fuels do what they say.
Run what octane your car is tuned for no lower no higher. Lower octane will lead to knock and possible motor damage. Higher octane in boosted cars will foul out plugs and not burn as well and in a normal car being DD it will not get you better MPGs or burn cleaner.
