Default VTEC = Black/Grey Smoke :S

My ITR is burning oil like crazy. The thing is that during normal driving (low RPM's), there is no smoke coming out whatsoever but when it hits VTEC I can see a cloud of black/grey smoke. Is that a sign of bad oil rings or could it be anything else? I know it could be running too rich but it wouldn't burn oil in that case. Any help would be great. Thanks guys.

I thought about that but there are no leaks. So I know it is not leaking. What could it be?

did u do a leakdown test or compression test on the motor?

there is a number of things that could be wrong.

u could have bad rings, bad valve seals, bad head gasket.

do the tests and tell us the results.

u could be running really rich too.

Compression is good. Car still pulls hard. I just don't know what's wrong with it. I'll see what can I do and let you guys know. Thanks

I bought the car with 89,000 so all I've done so far has been timing belt/water pump, spark plugs/wires and oil changes. That's it.

Haven't checked. Could it be a timing problem?

I wouldn't doubt it. My gas mileage is kinda sucky. But why am I burning so much oil?

sounds like you are burning more fuel than oil

Yeah probably, but I'm still burning oil which is not good anyway.

Did you actually do a compression test? Even if the car pulls hard that doesn't mean anything. What were your compression numbers?

I don't remember the exact order but they all ranged from 195-210 across.

I'll check that and the O2 sensor as well.

Your o2 will most likely throw a code. Do you have any missing? does it have a rough idle? watch your tach closely, as if it is ignition related your tach will act as if its possessed. As far as burning oil, most likely its either a worn oil ring, a damaged cylinder wall or your valve guides/seals.

This is my brothers name, but I've done alot of work on his car and actually put his engine in.

Oil consumption comes from several things, but 1 quart 2500-4000 miles is VERY common. As well, if you are not burning an EXTREME amount of oil and its just a worn oil ring, you will not loose power. As oil burns as well, and there is no loss of compression because the whole purpose of your oil ring is to scrape the excess oil from your cylinder.

Basically, check everything in your ignition system for your rich problem. Your burning oil, inspect your plugs for signs of oil residue, if there is none, and its running good, live with it, otherwise it will cost you more than its worth.

The only other thing I can think of that would cause oil in your cylinder is PCV system or your intake sucking oil from your valve cover into your intake tract. That can be seen by just removing your intake and inspection your throttle body. There will be oil buildup or residue there if thats the case.

Hope that helps, I know its a little crazy and spread out, but that is everything it can be. If your that concerned, do a leak down test, that will 99% confirm it is not your valve guides/seals. Then go from there.

Personally if the spark plugs were not getting fowled, it was running top notch, and was not consuming more than 1.5-2 quarts in 4000 miles I would live with it, that is not all that bad. Ford states (how I know I have no clue) that 1.5-2.5 quarts every 3000 miles is within specs and normal... so if that makes you feel any better.

Thanx a lot for your time. My idle is not acting crazy. The only thing I could say is that sometimes it'll go up to like 1500 and stay there for a couple of seconds and then back down to about 850 or 900. The intake system is fine because I checked and cleaned the TB. One thing I noticed when I changed the plugs was that plug 1 and 3 were missing almost half of the side electrode and kinda "whitish" color. I guess too hot? Now about the oil, the car is burning at least 1 quart in less than 1000 miles especially if the engine hits VTEC.

Any help would be great. I need to get this fixed and I would take it somewhere to get it checked but I'm just trying to narrow it down and save some money if possible. Thanks a lot.
