Valve springs and retainers w/o removing head
Hey guys i hope this is the right place to put this. Well Im wanting to put some valve springs and retainers in my motor since was running stock last year and reving to 8600rpms so i wanted to play it safe and put some better stuff in. Now is there a good way to change this stuff out with out removing the head or should i just yank it and do it while its out.
I was thinking of putting the piston up where i was working so the valves cant fall in the cylinder. Then using something to take them apart. My buddy has a tool for his LS1 motor that pretty much bolts to the head and you can loosen things up with that. Is there a tool that works that way with the hondas or no.
BTW its a gsr motor thanks in advance guys.
O and also im looking at the Supertech springs and ti retainers from jhpusa unless someone can recommend something better thanks

I just did the valve springs on my SOHC D. The valves actually stayed up after removing the springs because they were held in place by the guides/seals. But I did the same thing, put the piston at tdc that you are working on so if the valve falls you can pull it back up. I also bought the crappy autozone spring compressor and it wasnt the best but it got the job done.

If you want to play it safe with leaving the head on use a leak down tester and fill the cyl. that you working on with the max 100psi of air AND put the piston at TDC. Then you can use a spring compressor to remove the valve spring and retainers. I've done this a couple of times when having to do valve stem seals for friends and have them not pull the head. It works really good just be careful.

Yes it can be done with the right tools and air in the cylinder. Remember to measure the spring height and shim each spring accordingly so you get even spring pressure. Use the mafg. specs. Set each spring to the correct height, with the valves/retainers you are going to use.

Re: Valve springs and retainers w/o removing head (DonF)
i saw a thread once where a guy took out his sparkplug and inserted a long piece nylon rope into the combustion chamber but not all the way in(duh). once he set the piston to tdc, it compressed the valve up to the head. has anyone ever tried this?

I've seen the rope trick work before on my cousin's build. We're rednecks, it's how we roll.

Re: Valve springs and retainers w/o removing head (JCushing)
nylon rope works great. It's soft, won't damage any internal engine componets.
I'm a small engine tech so that stuff is my best friend. I keep a few feet of recoil rope by my work bench all the times. I used it for OHV engine valve spring removal for closer valve stem/seal inspection rather than removing the head. I also use it to hold the piston in place to remove clutches/fly wheels.

Me too! I saw one thread where a guy used zip ties and a vice to install the springs too. It looked like it worked pretty well. Who needs fancy tools...
