Default Thrust bearing placement?

Probably a dumb question but damn it I've searched and can't find it..

My manual says "install with grooves facing out" when installing thrust bearings.

Facing out meaning grooves toward the main webbing or toward the crank?? I'm just not getting it for some reason... I would think the grooves would go towards the crank, I mean they are there for oil retention right?

I'm used to small/big block V8 builds, the thrust bearings are a part of the mains...

The flat side sits on the block.

Ok, just what I thought. Is it me or is the manual confusing as hell by saying grooves facing out?? Facing out in my eyes is away from the crank!
