quiet straight through muffler
im getting tired f thevibrant muffler that i have.
like many people i got picked up by that stupid hype about vibrant mufflers that was going around the interwebs.
turns out they are nothing special.
i had a top fuel cat back that i sold for 200 bucks
then i bought custom mandrel bent piping 18 inch resonator and vibrant muffler
after about 400 dollars in parts and tonns of time wasted.
im exactly where i was with the top fuel cat back exhaust.
same fkn loudness just more rasp.
i want a muffler or better yet a full catback in 2.5 or 3 inch that will not hurt the power.
or at least not much, im willing to sacrifice a small amount of power to keep this thing quiet.
i had a greddy evo2
top fuel 2.5
itr muffler with 2.25 piping
and now vibrant with 2.5 piping.
if i can get something close to ITR sound where i can hear my engine more than my exhaust that would be cool.
few questions to exhaust pros.
does it matter if the muffler has a straight through hole or like magnaflow the pipe is curved inside the muffler?
having extra 10-20 whp is cool but its not cool if you wake up every cop in the city when you hit vtec...
are there any flow tests for mufflers at all?
like stock mufflers i would even go for a stock wrx muffler if it has good enough flow

not sure if you can put "straight thru" muffler and quiet in the same sentence.
FWIW, i've made 230+ whp through a 60mm RSR Ex Mag cat back. Its a chambered muffler and is really quiet for what it is. I would think that a similar exhaust system like the SP2 or World Sport should be able to support that power as well, unless the RSR is just that much better.

There is no "straight through" and quiet. Good muffler baffling is why the WS2 and SP2 are expensive, but nice and quality sound, but still allows plenty of power. I know others will disagree, but from all the vibrants I've seen and even used, there was always a disappointment in quality sound from it.

Re: quiet straight through muffler
You will lose some top-end power from a chambered muffler, but you said yourself it's worth giving up a few hp for better sound control. I haven't ever seen a back-to-back on a chambered vs straight-through muffler, but I'll bet the power difference is not as much as people might expect. I'd also keep it to 2.5" and don't go 3", it will be too loud for your taste. A resonator or two will always help as well; the longer the better.
I finally have a 3" system that I'm content with (wouldn't say happy though)... 3" mandrel bent, Magnaflow cat, 3x Vibrant resonators (1 ultra-quiet and 2 bottle style), and Vibrant muffler, plus a 36" branch resonator to cut drone. It's not perfect and is not quiet, but it's at least streetable. I wouldn't ever recommend going 3" n/a unless it's a drag car, honestly.

http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/02muffler.asp Magnaflows are pretty darn quiet. the key is to get a long enough body with enough space to absorb the sound. I couldnt tell you what you would need , but thats a list to start you off in teh right direction.

Tha is the muffleer that I am using. 2.25" straight through design. It has a great tone/sound nd is not ricey at all. Im having a little trouble with that crappy "blllaatttt" noise at a ccertin rpm but I don't believe its muffler related. Get. Good resonator or maybe 2 shrter ones is mmy advice

Re: quiet straight through muffler
I've wondered about 3" chambered vs 2.5" straight-through. The problem is most people aren't going to spend the money or time to swap out the entire exhaust system on a street car to find out. I bet the 2.5" has a better powerband than the 3" in that scenario though.
I can't claim to know all the science behind it, but my guess for one of the reasons a 3" is so much louder is that the wave amplitude is greater (the sound waves are larger) than a 2.5" or 2.25".

Re: quiet straight through muffler
Well guys, check out muffler from DYNOMAX.
The one I got is DYNOMAX VT. it's a straight through design with valve built in.
My set up was 3" eBay cat back exhaust that I cut the muffler out and replaced with flat black vibrant. If you guys have similar set up like mine, you know what I'm talking about. It is loud. Loud that I'm afraid to DD. Once I had DYNOMAX VT in, I can shift around 4g rpm in town without looking over my shoulder for cops.
I am SOOO very happy with this this exhaust. By the way, my set up is 85mm, 11.5:1 JE pistons afs, pp head with Sk2 pro 2 putting down 253/173 on churches dynapak.

I happen to like the sound of a Flowmaster Delta race muffler on a Honda. Its pretty quiet and has a metallic sound to it.

Re: quiet straight through muffler
I had a hatch with 2.5 inch cat and flowmaster resonator twinloop muffler 2.25 piping all the way across sounded great with a low tone for daily driving idk if I had major power gains but I was def happy with the sound. Didn't sound ricer at all. Spent about 400 total. I know there has to be other ways too though. A friend with a flowmaster muffler also sounded good but its not straight through.

Re: quiet straight through muffler
I did this, but welded it myself in my garage. Times are tough I got chrged 50 fo shipping and it came with only 1 flange and the rest were exhaust clamps. All the other ktellers I've used in past years have come with more flnges so u can make seperate mid pipe and axle back.

Re: quiet straight through muffler
anyone built their own muffler?
wouldnt it be better to use all the available space to make a slightly bigger straight through muffler that has the can up behing the bumper with a tip? i googled a few of them it looks like it can be made with an acess to a machine shop wich i have.

Re: quiet straight through muffler
Entire Master's theses have been done on muffler design... designing and building your own is no small feat.
That being said, I'd still like to see what you come up with.
