Default piston ring gap advice, supertech pistons

i took the rings to a "performance machine shop" to have my rings grinded/regapped and when i got them home i got some disappointing findings. I asked to have my top rings set to .014" and when i checked it some were .016" and some were .017". Those settings are for a strict road racing engine or turbo engine isn't it? According to Supertechs spec sheet

I'm using this engine for mainly fun on the street and occational road racing(NA setup with about 11.6cr on a b18c). I'm very disappointed with these local machine shops we have up here in my area. Do you think i will burn excessive oil for daily use on the street?

Also, my oil rings, i asked them to give me .014" for the top and bottom rails and i got anywhere from .013 to .030" Do you think there will be a problem with the .030" rail? Looks like the one of pistons/cylinders will be .030" on the top and the .013" on the bottom. Kinda sucks but just wanted some input if you think i'll have some serious issues running this type of ring gaps.

Thanks for any advice.

.030 on the top and .013 on the bottom? are you sure you measured correctly? you want the second ring to be looser than the top.

what size bore is this? .016 sounds ok for the top depending on bore size but .030 is WAY to loose.

sorry if i typed that wrong
i was talking about my top ring being .016-.017
and my oil rings(with the top and bottom rails) .013 and .030". The two rails that hold/sandwich the oil ring.

my second ring/scaper is about .020"

for 82mm bore top ring .015 to .016 sounds good. second ring I would set around .020 and the oil rails shouldn't need to be filed if they are the proper ring set for the pistons. they just need a min of .015 gap.

the .014 you wanted sounds a bit tight but possibly could have worked, remember you are better off lose than tight.

not sure why one oil rail would be .013 and the other .030 you would need to ask your builder about that.

my last lsvtec at 81.5mm was .017 top and .019-.020 second ring. didnt burn any oil (until it sucked some dirt into the cylinders lol)

the oil rails were actually .011 thats why i througt it to a "performance machine shop" to have them gapped to .014". but i ended up getting a varying amount of sizes . thats why im asking do you think i can get away with .030... seems kinda lose oem max is .028". but thats an oem cast piston as well

thanks blackteg... according to supertech .017" top ring is like turbo heat type application, thats why i got worried

im just not sure about that .030" oil ring rail but the oil ring is just for lubricating the walls right? nothing with compression/blowby, thats just the top ring; and the second ring just the oil scrapper. i maaaybe okay?

sorry im just trying to be as percise as possible and not chance anything

The oil control ring is perfectly fine at 0.030" as the 2nd ring almost always has a oil scraper as well. The oil control rings have very low tension for a reason. Also, you guys are quoting some pretty loose setups. Have you ever even measured a stock ring? I think you should - you would be surprised how tight they are. ..

I am well aware of oem specs compared to aftermarket

is the op using stock rings?

Supertech has been know to be a little more on the loose side, but like Nah2b pretty much said theres is a known difference for aftermarket pistons.
