it needs to be honed.... you can buy the tool and do it your self or just takeit to a machine shop.... my local machine shop charges like 35% to hone a 4 cylinder....

Why are you taking your engine apart aimlessly???

Do you realize you might have ruined a ton of good parts dissecting that engine like your a 5th grader with a frog?

How's the triple stage vtec coming along?

Here is where I got mine from. Pretty effective setup. It doesn't remove enough material, if any at all, to require new pistons like it would if you took it to a machine shop to have honed in a rigid hone. You do want to clean the cylinders as best you can before you use it.

What oil do you recommend with these honing stones? I have always used ATF as that is what my dad and his friends use but i don't know if its best. I haven't had a problem but just curious what everyone else is using.

I use the honing oil that BRM sells.

he is not boring them, just freshening up the cross hatching. Correct me if im wrong but you made that statement because of the coating they line the cylinders with right? Im pretty sure that is in the .00X" range for thickness. A bottle hone will only remove around .0001-.0003" depending on how aggresive you are and the grit used.

Correct, there is a Sunnen publication floating around here which sets the procedure to hone the FRM sleeves, but you really can't take much out at all and I think the stones are a special purpose type. You can contact BRM, they are very good at responding in a timely manner, and they can recommend you a part number to use. I dealt with Grant Fowlie and he was very helpful.

contacting the manufacturer is a good idea, its quite possible they make a different type of stone for cylinders with coatings. Also there is a slight learning curve when it comes to getting the speed and rhythm of the hone to produce perfect cross hatches. I would find something to practice on first because the quicker you can do the block the less coating will be removed.
