7/20/09 Hey, guys. I've been doing some research for the last month or so and now i need some help and recommendations. I want to rebuild my 97 h22a4 with 140,000 miles on the motor. please tell me if I should add, delete or replace anything. As of now i have AEM cold air intake, Tri-y header with 2.5in. collector,High flow cat ,Greddy evo2 catback exhaust, Innovative mounts and LSD tranny. I want a good reliable, run strong motor. I will be driving the car mainly on weekends and also will be taking to the track and street racing occasionally.
*List has been updated*
The build:
1)port and polish the head
2)skunk2 pro series stage 2 cams
3)skunk2 valves and springs
4)Skunk2 TI retainers
5)skunk2 cam gears
6)Omni TB
7)Darton sleeves and CP pistons 11.5:1CR 88mm bore
8)Eagle rods
9)RDX 410cc injectors
10)AEM fuel pressure regulator
11) Custom Fuel rail
12)255 walbro fuel pump
13)cometic head gasket
14)OEM oil pump
15)OEM water pump
16)Hondata IM gasket
17)Evans tuning on hondata s300
If there some thing that i didnt list or should do differently please add..
Around how much HP and TQ will i gain from this setup?
Thanks
My H22 before is was pulled
During the removal
My boyfriend Stevie in the red and our friend joe A.K.A Black
Black and I maneuvering the motor. It took us about 6 hours to completely remove the engine with stevie, black and I. We had a good time. I enjoyed it.
Disassembly of H22
In the pressure wash getting nice and clean
Block getting bored out for the Darton sleeves
Head P&P with 3 angle valve job and supertech valve guides installed from CCCylinder heads.
Took about 3 weeks to get it done after sending it out. It was $624 for the head work.
The head will be flow benched and compared to my other stock H22 head. Pics will be up soon with the head being flow benched.
Honda didnt have the right amount of rocker arms in stock, so i had to reuse my old ones. I resurfaced them and polished them by hand.
Some of my parts
Darton sleeves
OEM parts

You don't need to p&p the head......
Sounds like a fun and reliable setup to me!
Look into eCtune for tuning.
i won't guess on gains.......My friends 11:1cr setup with s2p2 cams and hytech header made ~50-60whp/25-30tq more than a stock H22 on the same dyno......
Your planned setup Is fairly similar to mine as well, but I run the JUN cams and Vibrant header. Gains were about the same as my friends.......

Re: H22 N/A rebuild...Good setup??
I read before that type-s pistons and skunk 2 stage 2 cam shafts are a bad mix due to some valve to piston clearences. I had some what similler setup and didnt clay ended up motor when to garbage (not really its still laying around) https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-prelude-4/how-not-build-your-h22-blown-engine-motor-2471911/

what degree were your cam gears set to? How much was the head shaved?
My friends setup has been fine with the S2P2+EuroR all the way to 13.4x and numerous 8000rpm+++ shifts.....He even sprayed a 75 shot on it with no issue into the mid12s.

Re: H22 N/A rebuild...Good setup??
There was alot of problems from my side, but the biggest one is that i didnt clay it. The cames were at stock position the head was shaved .35 i think It was a while ago dont remeber that well. But now im all most done with my fully built h22 and im goning to make sure its 100% right before starting it.

Re: H22 N/A rebuild...Good setup??
so the skunk2's are not a good match for the type s piston is what ur telling me right?
why wouldn't i have to p&p the head? wouldn't it give me better air flow..isnt it a over all good thing to do??

Re: H22 N/A rebuild...Good setup??
the big deal with p&p the head is it needs to be done right. put on a flow bench and worked on by somebody who truly understands air flow and your overall performance setup and goal. the only thing i may look into that you don't have on your list is a EuroR manifold. it has conciderable gain over stock, especially with a good tune. other than that it looks like a very reasonable and solid NA motor setup.
as far as the type-s pistons not liking skunk2 cams? never heard of that either? like NirVTEC said that may just be some mechanical error.

Based on your planned build......Anything more than a "casting mark clean-up" is overkill. H22 heads flow great stock with a good valve job. Spend money elsewhere IMHO.
To be honest, I haven't heard about TypeS+S2P2 p2v issues......
Possibly my own ignorance......

Re: H22 N/A rebuild...Good setup??
will it be safe to rev to 8k?
i also heard that Titanium retainers are no good for dd/track do to the fact that they warp like at 20k. would running stock retainer be something you would do?

From what I've read, there are definitely limits to the size the OEM can be ported. IIRC, it was something like 65-66mm. It's been covered, so I'm sure you can find it with a search.

Doubt you'd need the fuel rail or reg if you go with slightly larger injectors. Might as well do the Hondata IM since you're in there. Are you keeping this OBD2? If so, remember you can't change cam timing on the exhaust side unless you do an OBD1 dizzy conversion. You'd also be limited to a piggyback tune instead of a chipped ECU. Looks like a fun build.

Re: H22 N/A rebuild...Good setup??
Omni Power makes a nice looking one now for a good price! Too bad it's 70mm! Not to get off subject but has anyone tried this thing out? Pros cons?
I also think it wouldn't hurt to slap a Hondata IM gasket, but thats not a huge deal, depends on your available spendings.
As far as the retainers go... I'll leave that to somebody with more aftermarket valvetrain experience.

Re: H22 N/A rebuild...Good setup??
the guy that built my motor made his H22 put out 300hp N/A. He has Bisimoto cams, header, Ferrea valves, PNP, port match intake, eagle rods, forgot what kind of pistons. But u can make all motor put down good numbers with the right parts in it. He built it for nitrous, with 150 shot was making around 500hp.

Honda bearings are really good, not to throw another wrench into your plans but have you ever thought about the H23 vtec build? If it is your DD then you can get the H23 bottom end and build it before putting the car down for a while while you do this build... Rosko has a good euro-r mod that can give you some good gains

Re: H22 N/A rebuild...Good setup??
The OBD1 conversion costs about $300 for the harness and chipped ECU. Add on another $500 to that for a wideband, tuning software, and ROM emulator (if you want to tune it yourself). Or spend $200-300 for a one time tune.
You probably won't need aftermarket rods unless you plan on revving above 8k.

Re: H22 N/A rebuild...Good setup??
Still curious as the TypeS/S2P2 setup needing deeper pockets cut.....As I stated before, my friends setup has been fine for years with that.....No shaved head though.
Another friend is running a EuroR bottom end with JUNs and no issues...
I essentially run a 11:1 setup with JUNs and no issues also.
