hmm... This is worrisome. I do indeed have an "ek hatch"

Just get a WS2 catback.

you might loose 2-3 hp from peak hp made by the best performing exhaust, but really... who cares if you cant drive it because its too loud.

With an h22 i'm thinking the numbers are probably more along the lines of 5-10whp all across the power band. That is if we're comparing a 2.36" (60mm) exhaust to a 2.5".

I'm still surprised that the WS-II universal won't fit, seems odd.

Do have any experience with the WS2 cat-back system? I do and I lose 9-10whp on my GSR build...On a bigger motor I would guess its another 3-5whp on top of that. Yes it's quiet and sounds nice but bluntly, on a built motor, it performs like ****. I did got my numbers doing a pull untuned with the exhaust open and it was leaning out a little bit. I don't have a printout but I made 180whp w/ the catback and opened up it was pushing the upper end of 189...untuned. All pulls were done on the same dyno dynamics.

Im in a similar. Want to go 3" exhaust system but concerned about noise.

To reduce noise would be to add resonators (won't reduce noise by much, just raspiness). So the only way to reduce noise really is muffler choice. Muffers that reduce noise are usually a little more restrictive i.e. 'turboflow' mufflers, or twinloop. But wouldn't adding a restrictive muffler essentially be defeating the purpose of a having a 3" exhaust system which is meant to be to increase flow?

Similar discussion here http://www.ek9.org/forum/air-intake-...st-system.html

Please discuss.

Supposedly twin loop = straight through muffler. Didn't someone do a before/after with a twin loop and find only a negligible difference?

I just installed 3in eGay exhaust with an OBX twin-loop muffler with hytech rep. Very easy to talk on the phone or to anyone in the car on the highway or anywhere else. The only problem I had was the tubing on the twin-loop looks downsized to 2.5in. I'll try to take a vid tomorrow from inside the car and post it up.

I threw in the towel and corked my 3" with a custom silencer for daily driving. It's humane now (still louder than a WS2, but liveable). When I need the power (at the track), I pull the silencer and load the appropriate tune into my S300. Yes, I spent the extra money to get it turned WITH the silencer so I wasn't dumping gas.

And no, I don't care that I'm not making peak power at the stoplight when some clown decides he wants to race. I let him go be an idiot and continue on with my life.

I'm having the swap done by Mainstream performance in Dallas/Hiram, GA. I was going to have them do the exhaust and tune it all at the same time.

Though DSMAddicted is near enough to talking me out of them doing the exhaust, and having another shop in Hiram do it. Not sure whether or not I'm going to buy the stainless 2.5" mandrel bent kit from VRS Exhaust or just have Mainstream make me one from the cat back (non-mandrel).

As far as parts go it looks like the current grocery list is as follows:

Logic Try-Y header
Vibrant Metal Core 2.5" car
2.5" Piping (not sure whether to just have a shop do piping, or buy a kit. Mainstream can't do mandrel)
14" Ultra quiet Vibrant Resonator
2.5" inlet Vibrant streetpower.

What's the cost of all that shaping up to be?

~$1000

But it should make for some nice numbers on a stock h22. Also doing a 70mm Throttle body and Velocity stack.

I'm thinking it will be worth a tune,

Edit: ~$1000 for the exhaust.

My budget for the build is hopefully <$5,000 including labor for the install and all parts needed. Buying engine/trans from Hmotors. QSD kit.

Edit2: Here's my grocery list:

H22A LONGBLOCK and 96-97 ITR trans FROM HMOTORSONLINE. $2600 ($1000 for h22, $1300 for ITR trans, $250 for shipping)
QSD kit $750
Manual Tensioner Conversion Kit for H22 $125.00
Idler Pulley Spacer for BSE Kit $20
Innovative B-series Mounts $260
Shift linkage $
p28 ECU with h22 basemap http://www.hamotorsports.com/socketedp28.html $160
Logic Triy $400
$260 shipped Exedy Stage 1 organic
$190 shipped aluminum fidanza flywheel

Ls 5th $155 Shipped.
Mainshaft 5th: 23451-PS1-A02
Countershaft 5th: 23461-P80-000
PM Synchrotech Transmissions

It was $3400 before I started contemplating the cat/piping/muffler. So on the low side, <$4,000 for parts, and labor should be ~$1000 retaining air conditioning.

For that cost almost exactly you could get a full 2.5" Hytech exhaust with their cat and their twin-loop (minus header of course).

I can't even tell where on earth you'd order that. Their website isn't very good

On my s2000 i did a full v-band 2.5" to a magnaflow 1-2 outlet,
with 2 v-bands off each end, then when i want civilized non-track, non set off every alarm in the shopping center fun i can v-band on two ss-304 magnaflows(85-88db max!) or 2 3" chrome tips(100+ db)

hehe, best system i've ever built.. (last system was 3" with 3" n1.. boo)

Here's my B18 non-VTEC with 3in eBay exhaust and an OBX twin loop. The muffler has the loudest resonance around 4000 RPMs but would probably tone down a bit with a real resonator.

Mainstream can't do mandrel.
that is why i was asking. i was also considering mainstream to do my exhaust - 3 inch on an EG hatch.

mainstream told me they can do mandrel - so makes me wonder if they are just using a kit...

it was also much less than $1000 ($400) for my quote with resonator and magnaflow muffler...

~$1000 for the exhaust is including

$400 header
$100 cat
$100 resonator
$100 muffler
$200 piping kit.

They may order the piping from Exotic Exhaust in Hirarm, or they got a mandrel machine since I was there last. (6-7 months ago.)

They might just stock mandrel bends in common sizes and bends (ie 90˚, 45˚ in 2.5" & 3", etc), and then weld it together with straight sections.

The video above is making me want to use an OBX twinloop. I wonder if he's got a cat?

Yeah, I got this after doing a lot reading trying to figure out how to get my car quiet again. I used to have a Flowmaster and I won't ever do that again. No cat. My eBay exhaust has an el-cheapo resonator so I think a better resonator would tone it down a bit more. It's a little louder than you can tell in the vid but very easy to talk to anyone in the car or on the phone. Flow seems pretty good too.

I'm sure a 2.5" exhaust with a metal core cat, 18" vibrant resonator, and the OBX twinloop will be a lot quieter than a 3" with no cat.

Sounds great for a 3" for sure!!
