CTR cams on B18C1...aftermarket cam gears a must???
Like the post says, I don't want to sound stupid, but i was wondering if I needed to have aftermarket adjustable cam gears on my motor in order to run CTR cams? My motor is bone stock right now, but I plan to start making upgrades to it soon and the cams are one of those upgrades. I'm assuming that since the CTR cams are OEM equipment on the Civic Type R, I wouldn't need adjustable cam gears like I would need say I was running Skunk 2 cams or something.
I know cam gears let u adjust many things, but I'm after just a bit of power from the cams and street driveability. Can anyone help me?
The car is a bone stock 97 GSR..save for the fact the header and exhaust are coming soon too.
By the way, could I use those cams with my OEM GSR intake manifold or would I hav eto upgrade to a Skunk 2 unit?

put the cams in. get a chipped ecu with a basemap for your setup and a harness from matt first.

if you have the money or the cam gears already, i would just get them installed along with the cams anyways, for future tuning purposes.
i would also get your car tuned..i've been told you would have to adjust the vtec point or you'll see some sort of dip in power or something.

the one that converts your car from obd2 to 1, so you can get a chippable ecu. you don't need cam gears unless your getting it tuned. the powerband on my car is so much smoother now i have the proper basemap. vtec kicks in at 5100 ish and the secondaries open up soon after.

looks like dats the way i'll be going..hard part would be getting a hold of matt..that guy is harder to get a hold of than the holy grail!
so the cam gears are not necessary then?

Not unless you going for a full tune w/ aftermarket ECU

ok, so what would recommend? I just want the car to have a little more power but sacrifice to much of its drivability...I don't want the car to get a rough idle or anything like that.

Re: (mugenda6)
i Dont think you will need aftermarket cam gear if you only running a CTR cam..its the biggest "stock" cam, and nothing close to the aftermarkets

Re: (sinister6)
u dont really need it, i mean u can get away by just simply doing a p28. But then, its always help somehome because when i tuned my car, my tuner adjusted my cam gears. I picked up few hp here in there just by simply tweaking the cam gears
