Default Crank angle sensor

Hey guys,
im looking for a V-TEC engine with only one crank angle sensor, or do all V-TEC systems use both a crank angle sensor and a cam position sensor?

I'm in the middle of doing an engine conversion to my Holden TG Gemini (i know your all sighing) the engine im using is a G200W, with a Microtech MT8 ECU configured for a 4cyl V-TEC, being a MT 8 it cant be re configured, when i called Microtech they said there wouldnt be any problem using the V-TEC configured ECU on a static timing engine (non V-TEC) as long as i can mirror a V-TEC crank angle sensor set up, so thats why i need to find a V-TEC with only one crank angle sensor maybe the SOHC V-TECs?
any help would be great, thanks guys

someone has to know a bit about V-TEC engines on a honda forum.
dose the V-TEC system require a cam position sensor or just a crank angle sensor?

most engines use crank angle sensors and only one but not all are in the same place. on my obd1 h22 the sensor is inside the distributor. on other d series and b series engines they are located on the engine block. im not sure if the vtec system relies on the crank angle sensor to function. you can find plenty of later model d series vtec engines that utilize crank angle sensors, most of these will also use the camshaft position sensor as well.

its not important, unles your running a stock obdII ecu.. its not really that big of a deal.

Harry,

B/D/H series Honda motors have sync and reference sensors inside the distributor.

You will need to find a way to adapt a Honda distributor to your camshaft.

On OBD2+ Honda motors, an extra crank sensor was added by the oil pump on the actual crankshaft itself. This is not used for timing or reference, it is only for misfire monitoring for emissions.

ahhh... i didnt know the obd2's had an extra one. nice to know. ya learn something new every day

Yep. I've put on oscilloscope on it a while back, and it outputs a good square-wave. Theoretically, you could tap into that sensor for crankshaft position for an EMS. It is not missing a tooth, so you would need to add a camshaft ref sensor to effectively run sequential injection, or shave off one tooth to run batch-fire injectors.

The more effevtive option is the AEM EPM, it basically eliminates the ignition junk, just leaving you with a combination cam/crank sensor that bolts into the OE distributor's place for use with aftermarket EMS's.

If im not mistaken, the cam and crank sensors(inside the distributor) put out a sine wave...Depending what the ems wants to see..
That should be all you need to let the engine run sequential injection. VTEC operation should be easily activated by one of the configurable outputs of your EMS.
Sounds like an interesting project!!

It very well could be a sine wave, my o-scope is not the greatest. If memory serves correct it had a bit of a radius along the leading and trailing edge.
