Bigger Exhaust = More Power & Torque, plus it's quieter too
Well I thought I was finshed doing stuff to my "econo" build D16, https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1716907, but it was just too loud for these old ears.
The old exhaust was a Greddy 60mm B pipe with the bottle neck removed, 60mm over the axle tubing into a 2-1/2" 5x8 Magnaflow. At around 4600 it just got so raspy I thought I was going to get pulled over. So I built a new system yesterday. I'm still running my prototype D16 header into a 2-1/4" 300 cell cat. I then went with 2-1/2" tubing into a 22" resonator, then into a short 9-10" resonator that I custom built to go along side the gas tank and finally into a double offset 6" round Magnaflow muffler.
SGT wanted to try running the Crome software so he made the swap and we were off making pulls.
Here's the results, Run3 was today and Run13 was from the last dyno session. CFs were 1.00 for both runs and it's the same dyno.
Almost 118 lb-ft from the little D16.
Here's a video of the exhaust:

and one from the engine bay:

I switched them over to photobucket, I hope that works.

I wish my 2 1/2" exhaust was quieter.
Would a cat like that one quiet it down?
- Derek
(P.S. I bought the piping from you. Turned out nicely. )

thats the key right there you have a cat and 3 mufflers, of course it will be quieter.
it jsut goes to show you though that those stupid old exhaust myths are a bunch of crap. you know 2" for a d series, 2.25 for a 1.8, 2.5" for a 2l and 3" only on a turbo. any more than that and youll loose sooo much tq and backpressure lol what a bunch of crap... you gained the most tq 6k and below!

Maybe I need a 2.5 inch exhaust on my car?

hmmm but isnt there something important about exhaust gas velocity?

</TD></TR></TABLE> Yes and it is determined by the header and collector. The ex system just needs to be the correct multiple of the correct "wave length"

I formerly ran 2.5 inch piping with a 5x8 Magnaflow muffler too, but also has a 14 in resonator = no raspyness. Click link in my sig to see it.
I now have a Hytech exhaust with their twin loop = quieter than an Apexi WS.

I'm curious too. Would a 2.0b series motor with aprx 230whp be better off with 3inch piping? </TD></TR></TABLE>
This has always been my thoughts. I will try it in about 2 weeks. I might not be able to have time to retune though but I will try it at the drag strip.
