Grounded to transmission. Then transmission and engine grounded to chassis. Actually I can't think of any that aren't grounded this way...

I have worked on a few cars that required the starter to have a ground wire on it. Dont ask me why. Make sure all your 3 grounds are good. If so add one to the starter, and see what happens.
