A K20 will pretty much suck up that whole budget by itself and you'll have a 220 HP NA 1990 CRX. If that is what you want, go for it.

But I'd budget money for Suspension, seats, cleaning, etc. I'm pretty sure stock ride height and steelies with a K20 would still be pretty lame.

For the B18A, Forged internals, CSS, big turbo. 500HP+ But if you have to ask, this is probably not the route for you.

Research. Ask people how much they spent.

The point Freeman is trying to make here is that don't just worry about how much HP you can put out. It is about the whole sum of the parts.

Would you drive a car that has 5x the HP and stock brakes? It would be pretty dangerous.
Would you want to have the same handling of the stock car? No because you will be beaten in the turns, and won't have the grip for the HP to connect to the road.
Would you want to drive a 500hp CRX without any additional safety items like a roll bar or harnesses? Not at all unless you have a death wish.

$7k is a start to a build, but just remember it isn't the end all.

The order my build goes in is this:

OEM Engine swap
Paint
Safety
Brakes
Suspension
Enjoy for a bit
Then FI

Yeah, that was sort of my point. There is more than just a motor when it comes to a build.

For me it went:
Engine swap
Brakes
Suspension
Exhaust
Boost
Seats
Paint

But I was more focused on having a car that runs and is 'fast', not so much aesthetics (at first).

My best advice is make it a car worth driving first. Motor swap, suspension, seats, interior, exterior, paint. Then work on stuff such as rear trailing arm swaps, forced induction/motor building, tuning, etc. It doesn't matter how quick or how proud of something you are if all you get is negative feedback because it looks like junk. You may find that $7,000 can get you a hell of a car instead of building one. Check the market place.

Yeah paint probably should be last. My steps have all merged different items, but having an idea of what your priority order is, keeps you on track.

It is good to note that projects sometimes are never realized because of scope creep. You keep expanding what you want to do, and never complete anything. Additionally, gold plating is also an thinking anti-pattern. This is when someone focus on the last 5% of an item when it could have been called complete at 95% and there are diminishing returns in the last 5%.

if you buy a k series swap and go to a shop with 1-2k they will normally toss it in and do the fab work for you. however, with 7grand you can build a b18a1 turbo and have plenty left over for suspension and other things

turbo kits for 1-2k.. and then either stock motor with safe tune, or build the block/head on a street tune and still have some left over.

For 7K I would buy someone elses project that they have given up or lost interest in and finish it. You can often get 10-12k of brand new parts for 7k.
