I think the GTI may have more potential, but that potential will also cost more money? Your question can be best answered if you let us know what you are aiming for in terms of HP and such.
With the RSX-S you can throw on a turbo, or with the GTI you can upgrade the turbo... getting more HP is a bit broad to really give you an answer.
As long as you have the money, both cars are easy to mod since they both have a lot of aftermarket support. Good luck on your decision!

There's not much more to say after all of that

Re: rsx or gti mk4? (Ricer****)
I'd take the RSX, cause im a honda head like that.
but my buddy was about to buy an rsx-s, when he changed his mind n went across the street to VW. he paid 19g's for his GTI cash. the RSX was 23. he spend like 1500 for mods. he bought a chip, magnaflow exhaust, and a homemade intake. and his car pulls!
so GTI for value/mods. RSX for style and VTEC ..lol

Re: rsx or gti mk4? (x Da Clutch 5 x)
VW 1.8T
pros- looks good, great aftermarket, already has a turbo, refined, tons of torque, well equipped standard
cons- weighs close to 3k lbs, price of aftermarket and maintenance parts, FWD
chip, cai, dv, tb on stock turbo=200 whp and +/- 14 sec car
RSX
i do not know to much about it, but if it's anything like the ep3 civic it's similar great car, light, just needs a little more torque.
go to vwvortex.com technical/1.8t forums. There is tons of information on the 1.8T.

I knew someone was going to say something like that.....
Actually I am not trolling I wanted to join the forums b/c I just purchased a 06 CBR 600RR and my cousin just purchased a EP3 Civic.
I should have added that on my first post.
Thanks

I had a Mark IV Jetta with the 1.8T, AWP engine. The nice thing about those engine is that for a mere $500 you can get a Garrett chip and presto another 50 horsepower. Not to mention if you do intake, downpipe and exhaust you can get another 25-30. So for less than $1000 you can pick up 75 or 80 hp. Pretty good in my book.
As far as reliabiltiy VW's are notorious for getting better the closer they come the end of their production life. Its like they bring a car to market with errors and they work things out over the next five years and if you buy a car from the last couple years of the run you are much better off than at the beginning. Case in point, my '02 Jetta had tons of issues, my father's '03 has had almost zero and they are the same car minus the color.
The Dub will most likely never be as reliable as a Honda/Acura but sometimes you can live with them. Coming from someone who has had VW's and Honda's both you just really have to think through the process, the cars are very different in philosophy.
Good luck!

Re: rsx or gti mk4? (Ricer****)
If you are going to compair an RSX S and a GTI go ahead and look at the 06 Mark V. It's a 2 liter like the RSX and the tourque curve is wicked. At 1800 you have 200 ft-lbs of tourque and if you can live with out a manual the DSG tiptronic shifts faster than you can blink an eye. The Mark V is a lot closer to the RSX, and they are both costy. I have driven both, the RSX S, which I own, pulls like a raped ape up in the higher RPMs and I love red lining at 8 grand, but the Mark V has the tourque. Also there is great potential for both, but there ain't nothin like a K motor from Honda. I don't know as much about the Mark V engine except the tourque curve is rediculous and it's a 2 liter, but I have seen with my own eyes an RSX S with 350 hp to the wheels and was still early in the upgrade and tuning stage, but it all depends on what you are looking for. The RSX is a honda and we all know you can beat them to death, maintain them and they wil run as long as you put gas in them, as for the GTI, VW has been around the block as well so I'm sure they know there stuff too.

Re: rsx or gti mk4? (k20tuner)
i have a mkiv gti 1.8t and i love it. I paid $22K for it brand new in 04. With just a chip you can get about 25-40HP. Currently i have an aem CAI, 2.5" turbo back (wish i went 3-2.5" or full 3"), revo 3 bar program, HKS BOV and tein basics.
About $1500 for all parts i went from making about 10 PSI, 169HP 179TQ with just a CAI, to 194HP and 252TQ at 18-19 PSI.
Honestly i love both cars but i think reliability you can choose the honda but i love the comfort of leather heated seats, power everything, and being different. Plus i think honda is more likely to be stolen than a VW.
BTW, how much you want for your hatch? were both in l.a. maybe i can let you test drive my car.
