Pulling a Michael Jackson (Black to white paint job)
Whats up guys, my EP3 is currently nighthawk black pearl. Im thinking about doing a color change from black to white...nighthawk to champ white to be precise. Now here are my questions and concerns. So far ive taken the car to one body shop and they told me that going black to white is difficult since its going "dark to light". Not sure what they mean by this because i assume the car will have to be stripped down to bare metal anyways? Also granted i dont go to Maaco...will this paint job be as durable and look just like factory? My budget is $1000-3000. Now i know you get what you pay for but whats a decent paint job cost nowadays? Also i want to leave the door jambs/hatch/engine bay black...just paint the exterior champ white. What can i expect in a good paint job? Im also concerned about overspray...i heard that a good paint is 90% prep so masking and what not need to be top notch. Also how many coats does a good paint job normally have and whats the difference between all the stages of paint ie. stage 1/stage 2/etc. Anyone who has had their car repainted please chime in with input/experience.

Go paint your walls a really dark or wild color and try to paint them white. White doesn't cover well. If you prime, it can cover better, but as long as your paint is in decent shape, they'll just paint over the paint you have, there's no need to strip it bare. This isn't just automotive, it applies to most paint. Priming is usually just done on bare metal/wood or to cover darker colors. But with automotive paint, you don't want a thick coat.

just sell it and buy a white one.
to repaint a car all you have to do really is scuff it down and respray it. no need to strip it bare unless you fixing damaged body work. also leaving the door jams black may look a little off; its a lot less work but it will ruin the look of your ride. imo
as far as painting over the black.. you'll need a few coats and possibly some sanding in the middle just because the thickness of paint you'll be having to lay on there. a full color change can be time consuming for sure, if your paying someone else to do this, prepare to pay up for their time.

^ Agree! Sell and buy white one. From what I've seen in the past, even with exterior only paint, especially from blk to white, you'll pay arms and legs for what you may not be satisfied with; unless you have a broski hook up.
