Oh hey 4th gear, where'd you go?
So, driving home from Hershey Park last night, my EP decided it didn't want to go into 4th gear anymore. Car runs fine, shifts into every other gear just fine, no 3rd gear grinds even. It just will not physically engage 4th, cant even get the shifter to move into it. I didn't hear and noises or hit anything so I have no idea where this is coming from. The shift linkage isn't blocked by anything on the outside of the transmission.
Would changing the trans fluid help? I just changed it (with Honda MTF) about 7k miles ago and everything was fine.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Clutch might be on it's way out..
but yeah check your tranny fluid level to start diagnosing the problem. It should be level with the fill bolt (I'm sure you knew this already).

could be the clutch..i'm at about 125k on my 2002 and still on the original from the best of my knowledge. I'm the second owner, bought it with about 100k on it almost a year and a half ago so i have no record of it was changed or not.

I had a similar problem on my way back from Nashville. My car kicked itself out of 5th gear and then never wanted to go back in...I was seriously only doing 70 in the interstate and I wasn't driving crazy...bad synchcros FTL...

haha I was born 5 years after your last trip to Hershey Park BigDaddy
I hope it's not the synchro, It didn't kick out of gear, I just went to shift into 4th leaving the parking lot, and it wouldn't go in.

Opened up the tranny; f*ck*d up clutch, badly worn throwout bearing, no good synchro, flywheel... you get the idea...

Just topped off the trans fluid, might have been a tad low, took less than 1/5 quart to make it run out of the plug hole. Still can't get 4th to work...

Local guy! How was the park btw? lol
I can't see it being a clutch issue if it's only one gear. The clutch will normally affect every gear. Given that it simply won't pull into the gear, sounds to me that your 3rd gear synchro sleeve's teeth mushroomed over and won't let it slide down the synchro hub. Usually this happens from the sleeve getting beat up on the dogteeth on the gear itself (i.e. grinding). Odd that you mentioned 3rd doesn't grind at all but you're experiencing this.

Re: Oh hey 4th gear, where'd you go?
Are there ANY differences between the 05 and 02 trans'? (I know they fixed the third gear grind issue internally) I just want to make sure my 02 to 05 trans swap will but a simple pulling of the old and slappin on the new one

AFAIK you need a VSS converter to get the speedometer working if you run an 04-05 tranny on an 02-03.
