Default How do you drive your EP3?

Had my EP3 for a few months, its a vast change from my tq-ee 2.4l Altima. Way different to drive as far as shifting and starting.

My question is: When upshifting (1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5) is the clutch released before the rev's drop to the wheel speed or after? What i mean by this, is if you shift fast, drop the clutch quick, the revs drop to meet the wheels. Or is it better to shift slower so your catching the revs up with the wheels. With these cars it seems theres a sweet spot, i find it hard to rev-match during shifts without slamming the revs down. Currently i've been letting the rev's drop a little after shifting at like 4,500, then releasing the clutch so the rev's dont dump much, then push on the gas right as i release it fully. I guess im asking, what is the sweet spot? What kinda rev matching is used with clutch release during shifting? I also noticed that with this car, how much throttle you use while in a gear determines how quick the rev's drop during your next shift... with my Altima it seemed much more consistant as far as shift speed through the ranges, maybe it had a heavier flywheel? It seems to be tough to accelerate slow and shift at low RPM's with this thing. I'm so used to going up to about 3,200 and driving normal unless i'm feeling spirited. With my KA24 (Altima) i had so much more torque that shifting was much easier, i knew what to expect in the next gear. Oddly this car seems less forgiving, and people call me crazy for saying that.

Lots to read. Let the rev's go down to the next shift point. If you shift too quickly, the clutch will wear. Shift too slowly, your synchros will hate you. The clutch on my ep3 was hard to get used to and shift took a while to perfect shifting. Then the torque dampener made it even harder.

Which EP is your's? The only "modded" one I have seen is white one on steelies in Ashwaubenon and a black one with rims in De Pere.

No mods yet....a few planned, nothing major...just picked up some OEM fogs, may end up getting some yellow tint for the lights and some CTR red "H" logos. I have a heavily modified CRX that i dump the money into, this is just my DD.

Back on topic, i apprecite the reply, good to know its not just me.

Nice Pic!

as far as shifting mine,
if im driving the kids around- i shift at around 3000rpm,
i wouldn't worry about shifting too low- i found mine is VERY forgiving at low RPMS!
(5th gear at 30mph is even accepted!)

Spirited driving... Thats a diff. ballgame!
I let off gas, clutch, snap out of gear and into next gear,
while jumping on the gas again to match the wheelspeed!

...this is where others lose me...
i beat 2 kids the other day in a '99 civic, and they asked if it was an automatic?
i said no!
they asked if it had a turbo?
Nope!
i just shift faster than most people... Granted, i drove pizzas for 9 long, fast years in many civics!
(this is my 8th or 9th civic... The EP3 IS the TRICKIEST to shift! -but that's what makes it fun to me!)

sometimes i go nuts with the revs, and spin into second (Even had a 3rd gear spin a few times!)
FUN FUN FUN!
-i want to go "Spirited" driving now...but i'm watching the kids all day...
Hope all this helps!

i don't know what the hell you guys are complaining about,
but the EP3 is one of the most forgiving cars i have driven when it comes to shifting and matching without any jerks or clunks.
i think most hondas are.

try driving a 240SX WITHOUT a clutch fan (e-fan replaced)... the engine speed drops alot faster than with a clutch fan, and the differential on 240's is very sensitive to begin with (in terms of clunking when shifting and matching). and even if you shift right and catch the gear it will still clunk a bit sometimes.

don't worry, you'll get used to it. there's really no simple solution we can give you that will help because everybody here drives differently.

My friend's s13 is so silky smooth and easy to drive. It's making 240 whp. I don't know if it has the clutch fan or w/e.

lol @ how do you drive your ep3, slow, just like everyone elses. On a serious note, Im not sure about the ep3's, but in the rsx booklet, it list what speeds to shift at(which for each gear, equates to 3k rpms). If you're just cruising(not racing), try shifting casually. It show feel like a steady motion, not too fast, not too slow.

i agree, i found it much easier to shift my ep3 than my em2. the ep3 is easy smooth shifts, not hard to figure out at all

i dont think your crazy... imho - YOUR ALL RIGHT!

Ep3 shifting is Easy to learn... But Hard to MASTER!

So, with this in mind, i did some spirited driving after the woman got home last night,
and did the opposite today... a mellow morning spin around town...
here are the results for my stock '02 (w/CAInjen, reflash, and semi-fugly-stock muffler... )

My SWEET SPOTS!
"drive it like i stole it... AKA -SPIRITED! "
Sweet Spot... 7200RPM -REV LIMITER (One pop!), Snap-Shift, Gas... SEE YA!
1st-4th gears only... by then i'm usually over the posted speed limit- time to slow down!!

"drive it like my mom"
SWEET SPOT... 2800 RPM, when i dropped it into next gear, it would was at 2200 RPM...
that was thru 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th only... side streets... just keeping with traffic (and checkin out the hottie next to me! )

Does this help you anymore? -Remember, it just takes Practice!

WyldRice, your posts are a serious headtrip. You're such a crackhead. No offense of course. You spice things up around here.

i dont like being called bi-polar- i believe i'm better than that... i'm tri-polar!

don't loook at it as a label or stamp. look at it as something you have within you.
bipolar disorder doesn't define you.. you do.
and keep takin those meds too man, congrats on doing that. you seem a little hypomanic from your posts though, but maybe you're not.
i think you're just in a very good mood.
wish i was there too
