EP3 - backfires occasionally
I have a bone stock '04 EP3. At 25K I pulled the airbox, filled in the ports w/ great stuff, filed the ports smooth and replaced the OE air cleaner with a K&N. This eliminated some of the silencing properties of the airbox and seemed to shift the power band up slightly (less power below 4 grand and more above 5500). All seems well with only a loss of about 2-3% efficiency (27-29MPG) during daily driving. The only issue I have is that it will backfire very occasionally. The 8-10 times this has happened in the past 28k miles the situation is ALWAYS the same…it occurs between the 1-2 shift at full throttle but shifting at 3-4k revs. BANG, but hot real loud. More like POOF. Every time I pull the air cleaner I notice that it has carbon on it in one distinct location. I have not tried going back to the OE air filter (will try next), but have wondered if there isn’t enough backpressure during the 1-2 shift described above.
Any thoughts?

the same thing happens to me. I have Top Fuel C/F intake. the filter is old though. When I get the POOF sound the car loses power. It happens when I shift 1-2 around 3k-4k rpm. WTF is that. Sounds like its coughing.

i started to get it occassionally. it sounds like a discharge from the intake though.

mholt,
You said that you have 50km (not miles) on the car. Just out of curiosity, which EP3 / motor do you have? Si SiR Sport TypeR? K20A123...?

Re: EP3 - backfires occasionally (jpstewa)
I am doing the 60K service this weekend. I will replace the K&N filter with the OE filter and see if there is a change. Will advise...

I did the 60K major service today, replacing the air filter element with the OE filter. So far so good, but I will know more after I get more miles on it.

Re: EP3 - backfires occasionally (jpstewa)
OK, I am about at 65K. The past 5k has produced only one backfire. It seems that the OE filter put enough backpressure in the air box to keep the backfires from occurring. I am sure that the only time that it did occur was due to my having modified the air box. That is great and all, but there is a slight loss of power in the upper revs as a result of the OE filter.

I said I don't want a title!
Re: EP3 - backfires occasionally (jpstewa)
Yeah, we've talked about this before. The EP3, for some odd reason, tends to do this with a modified intake. Most popular place is the 1-2 shift.
It won't really hurt anything.
