Cleaning struts/shocks?

What do use to clean my shock and struts? Today i took off my wheel a it was dirty so i was just wondering? Can i also grease them? what grease do i use?

The rod or the exterior? Soap/water on the painted surfaces and maybe a little white lithium grease on the rod. Very little.
