Default 2004 Civic Si Clutch Replacement

Hi guys/gals....going to be replacing my clutch soon and want some advice. I'd like a nice performace clutch that is smooth. I don't race but do drive the hell out of my car.

Could someone please recommend a good clutch that is smooth but is also built for performance?

Thanks and cheers.

Unless you have some serious mods to the car why bother with an aftermarket clutch? So you can damage your motor mounts? Put an Exedy OEM replacement in it.

Agree 100% on buying a OE replacement kit. Try rockauto.com if you want to go that route.

If you really want a performance clutch, the Exedy stage1 is great. There's really no pedal pressure increase and its still a full faced sprung clutch made with quality components.

I've "driven the hell out of" lots of cars with the stock clutch. My heavily tracked S2000 and ITR run/ran stock clutches. Then again...the stock ITR clutch is kind of like an exedy stage1.

Whatever. To make a long post short....Exedy OE replacement or stage1 if you want a bit more performance without giving up drivability.

oem 2004 dc5 type s clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel...from acura, not some crap from china( cockauto)...pp is lighter by a couple lbs, and the clutch will last quite long if you do not drive like a moron....say 150,000 miles...

The clutch I suggested from rockauto is an Exedy. Why/how is thst cheap China junk?

I believe the clutch meant for 6spd transmissions has different splines than the 5spd version, no?

Have you ever looked at a stock honda pp next to an stock replacement exedy? the lower end excedy parts are cheaper for a reason....don't get me wrong, excedy makes some killer stuff...but their lower end made for a price point stuff is not as good as honda stock parts.....you get what you pay for!!!!

Wow. Your large font and bold lettering really got the point through. I wasn't aware before that I got what I paid for.

I think that when I typed "Exedy isn't cheap chinese crap", you read "you can get stuff for free. Never pay for anything." Either that, or you're moving on to a completely different point after I pointed out the fault in your original one.

OBVIOUSLY the Honda Genuine spec Exedy parts are of better quality. But what makes you think that Exedy's aftermarket replacement parts do not last 150k miles...or that they are of inadequate quality for daily driving? Experience? Or just "yougetwhatyoupayforOMG!"

I have also never seen a pressure plate that weighs A COUPLE POUNDS more just because it's aftermarket Exedy vs. Honda Genuine spec Exedy. I did not observe a weight difference in the PP of any of the cars I have installed an aftermarket spec Exedy into. I would have noticed a couple of pounds.

There are very few complaints about the aftermarket Exedy replacement clutches. I have a Exedy KHC10 clutch in my TSX and had a KHC10 in my GF's 06 Si DD before we sold it. I've installed TONS of the Exedy aftermarket spec clutches in all kinds of cars for myself and for other people without any faults or failures.

The pedal feel is great, the engagement is right on, and the disks always seem to last me a very long time.

I did use a dealership spec clutch in my S2000 because it makes a big difference on that particular car...and I track it heavily. But OP specfied normal use on a Civic.

*sigh*....You had a s2000 and you put a stock clutch and pp in....well you cared about that car. Kinda proved my point for me.

Kind of late but.. No. You can use a 6spd clutch with a 5spd trans.. The only thing you have to do is match the flywheel. So, type s flywheel + type s clutch = go. ep3 fw + ep3 clutch = go. EP3 flywheel + type s clutch = no go (or vice versa)

Been out of the game for like 5 years and lost my previous email account and have a new username. Only posting so I can get my 5 posts to post my car up for sale in the classifieds, have to be an adult now and sell my baby.

You're killing me Mustclime, I remember you being a worthy source of information back in the day. There is no benefit of replacing a clutch in a s2000 or any car for that matter if it is stock with no future of mods. The s2000 is a performance car, its factory components are advanced in nature, **** it has forged internals from the factory....its oem clutch and replacements will do a fine job. Replacing the flywheel is a different story though.

OP: I would replace with a factory replacement clutch like the exedy one mentioned, I have replaced my Ep3's twice now, one at 100,000 and just recently at 200,000. It is a greatly clutch and the most recent replacement showed that the clutch still had plenty of life left on it. A couple things to keep in mind while you're under there changing it.

1. I would replace the the flywheel with a 10lb fly, seems to be the best compromise of light/drivability and increases mpg and responsiveness of the vehicle revs.

2. Replace your rear-main seal. Ep3's seem to get a leak between 100,000 and 150,000 and its better to replace it now while you're in there for peace of mind, its dirt cheap anyway.

3. Also, now would be a great time to buy another great and cheap part, ESMM motor mount inserts. they are like 35 bucks if I remember and stiffen the sloppy subframe of our vehicles quite a bit.

4. If you don't replace the fly make sure to get it resurfaced or brush it up with a brillow pad.

Any questions don't hesitate to ask, good luck.

Gonna put my 2 cents since i have had both the OE Exedy and now have the stage 1 in the EP3 both with lightweight chromoly flywheels
The OEM Exedy lasted 110k and some hard driving. Still had life, but slipped a few times and I replaced since I started tracking the car.As to the comments of the OEM Honda vs the OEM Exedy. The only difference was one had a Exedy stamp the other Honda both purple metallic paint etc. Same with the Stage 1 . Very happy with the stage 1 too. You cant go wrong with either. If you are still looking for a flywheel i have a fidanza 10 pound flywheel in almost new condition pm me.

Pic of OEM Exedy with 110k :
