how many miles?
if its been 10k miles, then thats just an sign to show you need an oil change done.
if you do your own oil changes ignore it and follow the procedure that is shown in your owners manual.

Should people that have to ask this question be driving on public roads?? Do yourself a favor, RTFM and follow it!

The car was bought with 10,000 on it and did not come with a manual, and it is my mom's car. I drive a 91 hatch with ls swap and boost, the car has it's oil changed regularly. I suppose since I have no manual I shouldn't be driving on public roads then huh.. Possibly the most idiotic response I've heard on H-T so far

since you dont have your owners manual, ill do my best to remember the procedure. i have an 03 civic EX if it matters.
-before putting your key in the ignition, hold the trip meter button (the button you push to calculate miles/trip a & b)
-while holding down the trip meter button, turn the key ignition to ON, but dont start the vehicle yet. hold it for 15 seconds.
-then start your vehicle while still holding down the trip meter
-keep holding the trip meter button for approxmiately 20 seconds *at this time, engine should be running* (not sure how long, but i believe hold it down until the light goes away?)
if that doesnt work, check out http://www.7thgencivic.com and visit the tech section. it should be stickied as well. *i'd find you the link their but my internet doesnt let me visit that site currently*
keep in mind this procedure was specifically to get rid of the light to stop reminding you for the 10k mile oil change. is no cure or solution for any mechanical issue with the vehicle.

Re: (Doh!)
I only made the response due to the vagueness of the question. If the "maint req" light is flashing I would think of the obvious, its time for an oil change, tire rotate etc. You made no mention whether you had the owners manual etc. Honestly, if someone came up to you and asked what the light that says"maint req" means wouldnt you question their common sense??

wait, according to what you said, is it just flashing on strat up? or does it stay on (steady) while you're driving??.... If it's only flashing on strart up then disappears, normal.. If it stays on it's just a remainder for service or perhaps something wrong....

It flashes a few times on start up to remind you to get it serviced. It stays on when your service is past due(mileage-wise)
Making the light go out doesn't "solve the problem" It still needs to be serviced.
