1st MIL / Thrown Code on my 2006 Civic EX - Cell phone vs Civic
Well,
I still think that getting the Civic EX was the way to go... even if I'd rather have gotten the 06 Civic Si... Either way, it's a nice car!
So I was driving to work the other day, talking on my Treo 650, using a hands free device... and the SRS light came on!!
I'm thinking to myself... Christ, I got a lemon Civic... I should have waited for next year's model. ...I hope this isn't another Prelude SS Auto fiascoe...
Anyway, since the dealer is one the way... I stop in and say "Hey, my brand new Civic 06 has just thrown a code, and the SRS light is on!!"
They have me wait for about 45 mintues while they check the car out...
The service manager comes back and tells me (while showing the TSB about it to me) that an "electronic device" of some sort caused the signal to degrade between the SRS sensors in one of the seats and the SRS control unit!
So he starts asking me: Did you have a computer on the seat? ...a cell phone? ...digital camera? ...electronic **** doll? (just kidding)
Basically, ANYTHING the emits some form of RF noise can break the communication with the car's computers... and generate a code with the air bag system.
The only device that could have caused that would have been my Treo 650 cell phone...
...how much radiation IS that thing giving off anyway?
Gerhard

Well, it hasn't happened again since... and I've been doing a TON of talking on the cell phone while driving. (The wife and I are relocating to the Washington DC area, so there's a lot of calls to be made.)
What IS annoying is that I got the impression that you have to have Honda reset the SRS codes. I'm not sure if Civic is like my Prelude was: Where you can pull the radio fuse and reset the ECU?

Thats good that it only happened once... hopefully it was a fluke.
As far as only Honda resetting the codes my parents have an 01 Civic EX and quite often if you obstruct one of the side airbags etc the SRS light will come on. After my dad took it to the dealership enough times they gave him intructions and some wire thing to reset it himself. Ill talk to him tonight about it and check out the intructions they gave him.

Re: (Slow EJ8)
Heh.
On the 06 Civic there are a series of sensors for the air bags, but there is a automatic cut-out for the passensger's seat if a small child, low weight object, or no one is in the seat.
In so far as the signal issue is concerned... I suspect that in future models they'll probably put some form of shielding on the wires to protect from RF interferance.
If it keeps happening I'll probably do it myself.
