What looks dated about the NSX?? exotic really??
I'm planning on making a purchase of an NSX at some point this year and I'm really interested in knowing what do people think looks dated about them. More than likely I'll be buying a NA1 and converting it to an NA2 type r replica. Would an NSX coupe(non targa) look more dated than a NSX-t? Is the "T" really worth the extra money? Does a nsx with a black roof/pillars look more dated than an nsx with the whole car painted one color? Also how exotic does the nsx really look to people. I've seen some online that looks really exotic but pretty much all the ones i've seen at car shows just looks like average sports cars(besides the veilside one I seen in ATL). Anyways, I love them, just curious as to what other non-owners think.

Nothing looks dated, its all personal preference. If I could I would buy 97+ because I want the 6spd, thats it.

What looks a bit dated to me is the pop-up headlights, but personally (if I were purchasing one), I would care more about what I thought than what everyone else thinks.

The pop-up headlights only look dated when active, otherwise its a clean look. The strongest design characteristic in my opinion is the extreme cab forward design. There simply isn't another car outside of hyper cars that have such a visually cab forward look.
To me the car is beautiful. The flush headlights did help it stay modern looking. The interior is simple, but very clear lines. The only thing that strikes me as "dated" is simply the engine. It was amazing in the beginning of the 90's. But by 2000 it was starting to show its age. It wasn't underpowered, but the Corvette was starting to push hard and everyone else started pushing. I'm sure by 2004 it was hard to convince people to spend $80k on a car that didn't break 300hp (and not have a considerable weight advantage). I fear Lotus has done something similar with the Evora.
Despite my criticism I still find it to be one of the best cars around. I would gladly own if the resale value wasn't so stellar on them. I am always torn between the NSX and a twin turbo Esprit. I think the NSX is better looking, but the twin turbo V8 brings more to the table and the Esprit is cheaper for similar year.

Another thing that I thought funny back towards the end of the NSX's life cycle, was that the Honda Odyssey was the torquest engine of all of Honda's cars. It's 3.5L had 253 ft/lbs of torque versus the NSX's 3.2L 224 ft/lbs. I felt this was a fundamental problem as the flagship car should be the flagship car. A minivan and a purpose built sports car costing twice as much should not compete on any level especially in terms of engine values. HP was higher obviously in the NSX, but that is a by product of RPM obviously.

If you plan on modding it stay away from the drive by wire NSXs. I think that was added in 94 or 95'. I've also been told the 5spd is the better tranny for tracking the car.

Wow I had to look that sh#t up. I did not realize the NSX had DBW, and 1995, that was pretty new stuff back then.

A stock 3.2 with a great diet and basic mods, can definitely be a fun weapon @ the track, of course, still you would get smoked by 400+HP sportscars on teh straight line, now, a FI NSX is crazy, I had a Honor to drive a SC nsx and whoa, I can't wait to FI mine, but I'd go turbo.
The stock numbers @ 4.7 to 60 and 12.8 1/4 are not fast anymore considering the new incredibly fast cars we have nowadays but still that is fast in the real world.
This is such well balanced car that makes me think perhaps 350@ the wheels could be just perfect.
Looks, yeah, I think the pre 01 had a problem with dated rear, but it can be fixed without destroying the lines or going ricer.
This is my favorite NSX:
rear
Mine is the classic POP UP style and I still love it so much, I think the POP UPS have more character and romantic look, but still, needs lip and minor tweaks on the front also!
rear:
and the dated POP UPS, DOWN
and up:
bonus:
Most people either LOVE o HATE this car, for obvious reasons, which are, They HATE for what isn't and they LOVE for what it is. ... one thing though, the design is already 20 years old, with MINOR details fixed, still can look somehow current, GOOD LUCK!!

Pre 02 and 02+
About exoticness, well, I am no delusional but -if clean- and with nice mods, the still can hang with extremely flamboyant cars, of course, it doesn't look like an spaceship but it looks OK next to cars such:

3 foot mast antenna -- Though it has been modded out on the examples shown above, that is one long whip when the radio is on.

Woow Oscar!
Love your red NSX & yes the pop-up does have the aura of exoticness albeit it was refer to the old 80's & mid 90's kind of exotic style. But anyway I still love it.
The NSX does look old.It is the fact that cant be changed. But for some that love it would going for it regardless of how old is the overall shape & how the styling have endure all the time.
As I own RX8(facelifted model),350Z & NSX,I can tell you that new gen kids especially ladies would be hooked by 350Z even more than those others 2.
When they look into my NSX,they would think it was a typical 80's-early 90's car with abit of boxy shape & long rear end....together with black roof, flip up light, scuffed interior leather trims, slooping centre dash & long-flat rear light & H badge are make my NSX are hardly ever recognized as the exotic.....many of this new gen kids & girl would love to assume my NSX as a Prelude....(If they even happen to know what is Honda Prelude lol)
Want attraction, you can go for new breed sportscar. If you want something that remind you on how great was the 90's was meant to japanese sportscar industries,go for the 90's japanese sports coupe(All of them are sure look somehow dated, but I wouldnt mind to change my Z33 to 90's 300ZX & my RX8 to FD....it would satisfy my heart just like when I hunting one of these all-looking mid engined car from Honda)
Even all of that,I still can say the NSX was one of the greatest sportscar & exotic that ever came from japan. If you had a money for F-car but dont want the old 308 GTS,348 & some others early 90's Ferraris, you can always opted for the NSX.
But after all, follow your heart when making a buyout. Some people would easily get bored with the NSX just because it garnered less attention than those hyped-up GTR,the absence of those glamorous conti,or less fancy in term of styling to compete with new breed....but so far I love of how the car was less-overstyled yet does have all the profile that every 90's exotic should had.....Brilliantt!

Re: What looks dated about the NSX?? exotic really??
Ya but for example on my car they affixed the attena to the underside of front body of the car. And while having no visible antenna is great, the reception is absolutle horse *****. FM only works OK onthe strongest of channels and AM reception is practically unuseable due to interference from other electrical system near the antenna as well as just plain being so low to the ground.

Re: What looks dated about the NSX?? exotic really??
Me personally... I love the 1st gens. The pop up lights make the body look so sleek when down and even up the pop up lights barely pop up compared to other cars giving it an incredible look. Underpowered for todays standards without a doubt, but as far as looks I still find it hard to believe first gens were made in the early 90's considering the styling. Put it on wheels and lower it and wow what a beautiful car! Stock for stock the 2nd gens look much better though.

Re: What looks dated about the NSX?? exotic really??
The only dated part I'd consider is the front bumper, if the grille was repainted. The plastic innards HAVE to be matte black and look like they aren't there. The steering wheel is the only part of the car that looks boring, and that can be changed easily.

Re: What looks dated about the NSX?? exotic really??
First of all, I'm from the school of thought that dated looks cool. In my opinion the three most aesthetically beautiful cars ever produced are the Ferrari 348, Ferrari 250 GTO, Acura NSX. I personally prefer the "romantic character" of the pop up headlights. Dated? Fine by me. It's a work of art therefore it's timeless.

Re: What looks dated about the NSX?? exotic really??
I feel as if the nsx with flip lights can be a little dated but holds up better than most cars of its time, the conversion to na2 i think will always be a classic that no one looks at as dated though.
