Wut Rpm do u shift?
Ok i own a integra rs, w/ a jdm 98 spec ITR engine and tranny.
I'm a student so i mainly use it for daily drives and once in a while race.
I just started driving manual like a month ago, and i was told to shift gears at around 2,500-3,000 rpm and always keep rpm above 2,000 or else it'll hurt the engine.
I was told driving at 2,000 rpm saves gas too. But some ppl that i know shifts at like 3,500-4,000 rpm.
what rpm do u guys shift at for daily driving?

RPM's go up fast with an ITR tranny for daily driving i shift around 4 grand
I keep the rpm's low when the car is running cold in the mornings

That's what the rev limiter and fuel cutoff are for bruh!
Unless you're running a chipped ECU that doesn't have a rev limit, or are using Hondata or some other kind of tuning system, you won't rev that high - as long as you don't mis-shift.
(note: I never said anything about built N/A motors not being able to rev that high. )

No, i'm concerned on which rpm saves the most gas. I'm a student and i really don't like paying alot for gas, and that's y i rarely Vtec because i'm afraid of forking out more money into the gas tank.
I was taught to downshift into Vtec, like from 4th to 2nd, but i havne't been doing it lately cause i read some post about some guy almost blew his engine by doing it.
So now when i Vtec, i just go the legit way of 1,2,3,4,5
P.s What is a good rpm to downshift into Vtec at without making the Tach go into RED

Are you talking about downshifting to gain speed? If you are then you have to know how fast you are going in 4th before you shift into 2nd to then accelerate into vtec. You can not be going like 100 mph in 4th then downshift into 2nd lol. If you do say bye to your engine

Haha! Reminds me of Expo 1. Major syncro ownage.
4th to 2nd downshift at 100mph = 10,000rpms = major

i think you need to just drive the car and learn it... its called experimenting little by little... and if you cant figure out the shifting points and downshifting points and limits and what rpm's in each gear are at, at a certain speed then you need not to have that caR.

Re: Wut Rpm do u shift? (mikestypeRR)
Lets say i downshift into 2nd from 4th and hit Vtec, and maintain like 6000-7000 rpm, would that be hurting the engine, because when i downshift into Vtec, my exhaust sound goes from vvvvrrooommmm, to VVVVVVfffffrrrrrrrrrrrooooooommmmmmmmm.
which gear to which gear is safest to drop into Vtec in? My engine is JDM and i don't think i have to money to buy a new one if i blow this one, so i'm asking anyone with long term experience with downshifting.

Just keep it off the rev limiter, you won't hurt anything.

Re: Wut Rpm do u shift? (hubjub)
for normal cruising/driving:
shift points: ~ 4k rpm
cruising points: above 3K.. average of 3.8k-4.5k
if for some reason below 3k.. maybe 2.8k.. i just stay light on throttle

Re: Wut Rpm do u shift? (vtec.dc2)
wow driving at 4,000 rpms? wouldn't that be a waste of gas? higher rpm = more gas burning right?
lets say i'm going 60km/hr. would being in 4th gear at 3000 rpm(60km) and 5th gear at 2000rpm(60km) burn the same amount of gas?
My daily routine would be sticking onto 5th gear while going 60km/hr and anything below 60 i downshift into 5th.
when i'm going 60km/hr on the highway when i stick with 4th gear my rpm is at 3,000 and if i go into 5th gear my rpm is at 2,000 and if i drop into 1,500 in 5th while going like 50km/hr i start hearing a lugging sound.
My fears of driving a b18c integra are:
If i daily drive at a 3000-4000rpm i'll be wasting too much money on premium gas.
If i drive at 2,000 rpm i feel like i'm saving some gas money, but i might be damaging the engine by dropping below 2,000.
If i downshift improperly i get gear grinding (eg. first time trying to downshift into Vtec), but i can't blame myself since this is my first car with a Manual transmission, but now that i've tried manual and Vtec, i just can't go back to automatic on a Toyota corolla .
P.S sorry my car doesn't have a rev limiter

Funny how no one really answered his question. Look:
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by hubjub »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">No, i'm concerned on which rpm saves the most gas.</TD></TR></TABLE>
The lower your revs, the better your fuel efficiency, but the worse your rate of acceleration.
To maximize your fuel efficiency, upshift at the lowest RPM such that the engine doesn't lug (make a groaning noise) after the upshift. This will generally be somewhere in the 2000-2500 range. However, even if the engine doesn't lug after the upshift, your rate of acceleration will be VERY slow. That's why most folks shift more in the 2500-3000 range, for more reasonable acceleration, with a slight penalty in fuel efficiency.
To maximize your rate of acceleration, upshift at redline. (It's not true on all cars, but it is on the VTEC motors.) That's what most folks do at the racetrack. And what some folks do on the street if they really like to buy a whole lot of two dollar gallons of gas.
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by hubjub »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">wow driving at 4,000 rpms? wouldn't that be a waste of gas?</TD></TR></TABLE>
It will use more gas than shifting at lower RPMs, yes, as noted above. It will also give you quicker acceleration. Whether that makes it a "waste" is a value judgment. If all you value is gas consumption, then it's a waste; if the quicker acceleration is important to you, then it might not be a waste.

Re: Wut Rpm do u shift? (hubjub)
is it a waiste of gas? only if your primary goal IS to save gas.. mine is to have good mpg but mainly to enjoy the car..
now, for crusing, you'll be in closed loop. so gas consumption should'nt increase, even if it does, it woud'nt be much different.. of course, if you stay out of high rpm and wot, you'll manage better mpg.. but while traveling at 2krpm you'll spend more time on GAS pedal as opposed to traveling at 4krpm you'll spend less time at GAS pedal, and if both in same position and closed loop.. you might even get better results while at 4krpm..
