Valve springs installed height ?
How do you measure the installed height of valve springs ? For example, i'm installing JUN valve springs and the installed has to be 1.340". Is the measured height from the head to the top of the valve spring ? I figure if it is to short then a shim can be used to raise it up, but what happens if you installed height is to high ? How do you fix it ?

If its short then you grind the head under the spring seat.
If its too tall or there isnt enough seat pressure then you add shims.

I don't know which manufacture made that tool but Crane cams sells one, you can probably go to Snap-on tools or do a web search and look for a "Valve Spring Height Micrometer."
Sgt, can you recommend any valve spring removing tools. I have used the C clamps ones and the over-head U shape one, but they seem so bulky when I try to remove the valves ? Does any other company sell one that make this job easier on hondas ?

not to bring this topic up from 2 years ago lol but i need to measure installed height and have the same tool as Steve showed above but it dosen't fit b-series heads because they're so tight.
Anyone have any success with a dial caliper or any other clever methods?

I found that out the hard way too when I got a Proform one.
I'm looking into getting a set from Goodson that might work with deep skirted OHC heads.

Nevermind. The one I looked at is for measuring stem install height. Close, but not exactly what we're looking for.
The only way to do it might be to rigidly fix a dial indicator and stand, baseline off of the valve seat and then push up on the indicator plunger as you install the valve, retainer, and locks.

hmm there's got to be a better way. It seems like you wouldn't be able to get consistent results with that setup because you're constantly moving the indicator to install the springs and have enough room for the compressor.

You don't install the springs when measuring spring install height.
Spring install height isn't dependent on the springs. It's dependent on the stem length, spring seat thickness and retainer thickness & placement.
