Are Type R's Overrated?
I'm 32 so the Type R was my dream car since high school. When I drive it, I just feel good and care free but people don't seem to care about the car anymore. I'm ok with that because they don't pay attention to my car even though its bright yellow lol. I remember every time I used to see one I got so excited. What do you guys think?

The Type R was good for its day. Its still the **** to Fan boys and purist but by todays standards the gawdy looks and 200hp just don't cut it.

To each their own I love my type R. If you don't like it? MORE FOR ME. I don't own my car for other people to like it. I rarely drive it but when I do it feels amazing. Just live and let live.

Re: Are Type R's Overrated?
Are you guys talking just as a city cruiser or as a track vehicle? Because in regular light to light city driving almost every Honda sucks, there's no torque to pull nicely at low rpms, so you can lump almost every Honda into that category.
On the track with a good driver and a good setup the car can really shine. That's when the technology of it's day or rather lack there of technology (side air bags, drive by wire, etc.) Is actually better, the car is very light and responsive, you can really feel the feedback the car gives you, you feel very connected.
I tried driving a newer mustang (an 04-05 i believe, before they went with retro styling) hard and I hated everything about it, first off the visibility sucked, I couldn't see **** in it, there's no direct feeling with the vehicle, shifter felt clunky, it's so heavy so it tended to Bob and weave hard, I had to slow down way more around turns, the straight line punch was good but everything else sucked on so many levels compared to my R.
But in light to light city driving the R would get left in the dust by the same mustang. In the end I guess it really depends on what you mean by over rated.

The motors power, yes. The high comp b20 has a good grip of torque over it and the LS motor only misses by 6 tq. But the feel youll get from the type R will be far more of any other Japanese FF you would ever get into. If you have grown accustom to them since high school and I know how that feels, get one. It'll only fulfill your dreams. But you are 32. Either now or never.
Edit: I just noticed you actually own one. Were they overrated at the time of production IMO, no. In 2015, yes.

Even after all that, I am extremely glad that I purchased my ITR. It made me appreciate driving a lot more. It still puts a big smile on face, like a fat kid eating cake, every chance i get to drive it.

Re: Are Type R's Overrated?
I've been bashed for buying my R couple weeks ago for the price point, to the age of the car, but my brother said as long as your happy, doesn't matter what other comments are.. I looked at him and said "I'm very happy I did"... End of story.. R's will be overrated if you allow others get into making you feel that way and vice versa. I'm truly happy I made the purchase and that's really all there is to it..

Re: Are Type R's Overrated?
I love driving that thing around even though its stock. Its a different feeling that driving my mdx or my tl shawd. I have been contemplating if I should make it faster or keep it original it just feel super slow compared to the Turbo gsr I had lol. I might do some work but still keep it as original as possible.

Re: Are Type R's Overrated?
Not by a long shot. All the praise and respect the type R got was earned, not given. People keep the R for a very long time, because its a car that is literally man and machine working together.

For the record, from the record, EVO Magazine, Issue 135, October 2009..."The 100 Greatest Drivers Cars":
100 - Toyota MR2
71 - McLaren F1
66 - Ferrari 250 GTO
52 - Porsche Boxster S
48 - Honda NSX
36 - Lotus Exige
26 - BMW E30 M3
24 - Ferrari 288 GTO
22 - HONDA INTEGRA TYPE-R
19 - Lotus Elise
Top Ten includes Elan, Miata, Caterham
The Type-R is not Overrated...it is Highly Rated...it's also "A Honda Civic"...which says, I think, quite a lot about Honda and their Civic back in the day.
Scott, whose decrepit old shlong still perks up for ever rarer Type-R sightings...If I saw yours I'm sure it would salute...Does that make you feel better?

Re: Are Type R's Overrated?
Exactly! An E30 M3 is definitely not a fast car at all but it is a very commanding car in the right hands. The ITR is no different.
To put it in perspective, I daily'd mine for a couple years(2003-ish); messing around with it, learning about the tech, doing some highway runs, some touge ****, etc. Then, I went to a HPDE for the first time. A pro driving instructor drove me around for a few laps as I was a beginner. I gave him carte blanche to push it to the limits. Well suck me dry and call me dusty! Dude ripped it. I had no idea what the caR was capable of and I had owned it for 2 years already. Ha! I loved it before and fell in love with it all over again. Still in love to this day. Would buy another one just because. In the right hands it's a handling monster, even by today's standards. It's the lack of power that most complain about which is why some move on or are not that thrilled with it to begin with.
So is it over-rated? I'd say no because every mag or journalist praises the car from front to back, every time.

Re: Are Type R's Overrated?
A long time ago in another life I was going thru the school at Pacific Raceways so that I could run their lapping days. Many of my classmates were in then late model Porsche 911's, and some of them asked an instructor how that ricey white car was going so much faster than they were thru the training maneuvers. He explained to them that the Type-R was a "factory race car", subtly implying that their Porsches weren't. The acceptance of such an explanation was bittersweet for them.
Scott, who has a couple of T-shirts that say something about "Humble your prey"....Yeah, the Type-R is overrated you think, and then somebody blows your mind with one, or better yet you drive one and it blows Your mind...my mind is totally blown...

Re: Are Type R's Overrated?
Are they overrated?
Well, I would say yes they are in terms of performance for the dollar. In general, I think they are probably "valued" accurately in terms of driving experience, unique features, and collectability.
There are very few cars from this era that will ever reach significant collector status because it was just a dark time for vehicles IMO. Ask yourself if there is anything else comparable? There is really no other limited run Japanese import vehicles that made it to North America between say 1990-2005... at least nothing I can think of. Cars that I feel have similar hype to the ITR, at least in terms of Japanese vehicles? NSX, Supra TT, Nismo 350Z (maybe?), and S2000 CR.
When you start going down the list of ITR's that (see below) you find there are barely any examples left that fit the criteria... and an entire generation of kids who grew up enamoured with the Fast and the Furious who are growing up and now have plenty of cash to spend.
- Clean title
- Matching numbers
- Has badge
- No stories
- No damaging mods
- No accidents
- Low miles

I said I don't want a title!
Re: Are Type R's Overrated?
I probably still have mine in storage somewhere. Probably an XL, maybe an L. How much cash you throwing down?

Re: Are Type R's Overrated?
This article below sums up why the Type-R is such a caR to have wet dreams about, its legacy, and etc. I'm still driving my caR to this day it has wonderful road manners, yet at the same time turns into a little beast of a car when its been modded correctly street/track. I even wrote a term paper for my College English class on why the Type-R is my dream car and made an A!

Re: Are Type R's Overrated?
I wouldnt think they are over rated. For what they are and what you can find them for I feel they are a very good deal. I pondered this before I bought mine as to what it would take to build a 3000 civic to road course like my stock ITR can. You basically end up with about 10k into a car worth 2000 dollars. Or you just buy the type R that has a value and do a few simple things and are good to go. I feel it is a pretty good value. Brakes are great. Powertrain and transmission are great suited for a fun track car.

Re: Are Type R's Overrated?
They are a great track car, but the cost to buy one now is way to much simply because of how rare they are. That's why I put a full type r engine into my ej coupe and nice one piece suspension for a quarter of the price. I always have liked the integra type r but I can't see paying what they are going for nowadays. That's amount of money can get you a crazy build for a civic instead.
