I have conducted various searches on this topic and have not come up with anything substantial, except that my symptoms match many others who have input shaft beaing problems.

My ITR makes a rumbling sound when the clutch pedal is not pushed in, the noise goes away when the clutch is pushed in. I have recently replaced the clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, throw-out and pilot bearings.

So, my question is: Has anyone replaced the input shaft bearings themselves or is this a task that requires special tools etc? I have a helms and replaced the clutch myself so I am reasonably mechanically inclined.

I do not believe the transmission needs an entire rebuild because when I'm shifting between gears it is smooth with no grinds, it just has the rumbling sound when at a stand still.

I want to make sure I'm going down the right path with this since the price for a rebuild or new transmission is astronomical compared to a couple bearings and a weekend wrenching.

The symptoms you're speaking of is reminiscent of an input shaft bearing.

The part number is 91002-PS1-003

It's number 16 on this diagram


You need to pull the tranny to get to it.

You'll also need part number 91216-PH8-005 which is the seal (pt#21).

Is it worth paying someone to pull the tranny right now? Probably not. I could see it if you were doing a clutch in a little while, but to pull the tranny for that, isn't worth it IMO. I've been driving with the noise for over a year and it's fine.

However, if you do your own work, than go for it. Also consider the following part numbers when you have things out.

91004-P21-003
91003-P21-003
91102-P80-003

That way, you've got the main bearings taken care of. Throw in some thicker weight MTF like Redline MT90, or GM Synchromesh and you should be good for a long time.

Thanks, thats just what I'm looking for.

I will probably pull the transmission pretty soon since the car is not being used daily. Is it pretty easy to get to these parts once the tranny is pulled and the housing is removed?

Can't say i agree with this logic. Replacement is straight forward if you're mechanically inclined.

Pulling apart the tranny is a pretty straight forward process. If you have a helms or an online manual you should be good to go. I don't know which part of MD you're from but I'd be willing to give you hand if you need it. I've had mine apart a few times now.
