Supra VS TypeR
Can anyone give me a good explanation of what the positives and negatives are of a Supra over a Type R and visa versa? What are the differences in handling? Differences in speed over the R with the non TT supra and the TT Supra? I know that the TT is a monster but I just wanted #'s. Does the R excel in any category? i.e. gas consumption, weight, engine reliability? Just wanting information for my own knowledge. Thanks!

I wish you could talk to one of my friends. He had a 98 R and a 98 supra TT. After he sold the R he missed it. The R is a better daily driver. I would get an R over a NA supra any day. The TT is a beast. I have never seen a faster street car. 450 whp with only $1000 in mods.

Re: Supra VS TypeR (jond)
non-turbo supra is a girls car. 15 second 1/4 miles.
If I could build a car, it would have I-6 with 8,500 rpm redline + rwd setup and weigh ~2500 lbs. The only thing that almost fits the description at this time is E46 M3... but I don't have $$$.

I can't say the non TT excites me much.Your friend that now has a Supra and misses the ITR has issues.Supras are just as reliable, just as fun and are much faster.

He had both the supra and R at the same time. The R was his daily driver. He abuses cars, and the R handled abuse well....More caution must be taken with 450 whp rear wheel drive car.

Re: Supra VS TypeR (Rdriver)
I don´t like the look of a Supra. Without a bodykit the Supra is kinda ugly viewing it from the front. The lights are too big in my case. It is a nice sports car, but you can not compare it to a type-R. 2 different classes.

Re: Supra VS TypeR (austrian ITR)
A friend of mine is selling his green NA Supra '97 Special Edition in pristine condition if anyone is interested. He was asking 25 or 26k last time I checked - he's working on a cruise ship right now so he doesn't need a car (bastard). I got to drive it - it's very smooth but more of a cruiser IMO. I'll stick with the R for now

Supra = 4k lb, i6, tt, FR, bulletproof engine.
itr = best car under $25k, nimble, tossable, very reliable, cult classic.
I'll take one of each please!
Seriously, the only car that has characteristics of both is the FD in r1 or r3 trim...
And the above sum up my dream garage. :sigh:

Re: Supra VS TypeR (vtecvoodoo)
apples n oranges
the handling difference i wouldnt know.. since i drive the car 99% on the street/hwy i know what i need but my R isnt givin it' to me
Supra will respond quite well to engine mods.. all the little upgrades will give you lot of power comparing to the R.. hmm i wish i had bought one.. and dumped the same amount of money that i did in the R.. i'd be driving one crazy stupra by NOW!

Re: Supra VS TypeR (R-Adrenaline)
That's what I work with all day long , Supra TT's and it's a truly incredible car. Expensive to mod, but you get your moneys worth. For about 10k into it you can have a 850+ daily driven supra TT with no NOS. That's good for high 9s-low 10s and you can drive it home. In a straight line no ITR can touch that. On a roadcourse it's a whole nother animal but If it where me right now I'd take the ITR. If this was a few years from now where i have the extra money then I'll have a TT.

Re: Supra VS TypeR (JSpecwest)
Ummm....I think it would be better to put a single turbo on the Supra TT.
I have a budy here in Chicago with a tt with a single turbo upgrade. Its a street driven car with ac and a radio pushing more boost than ever thought it could handle with over 160 mph trap speeds. I'm not too sure if any of you recall but this summer he actually called out John Hennessey(viper). They were supposed to do some race down in Texas, 1 mile. It was all over the internet for a while. That is one quick car.

Re: Supra VS TypeR (py1188)
my friend had a 94 TT supra about couple month ago b4 he trade in for m roadster.
we use to race sometimes b4 there was no way i could follow that car, way too fast, but one thing for sure the handling is not good as R. i've drove it couple times. the car was too heavy, it made really diffcult to turn, however even tho on track i still cant keep up with supra coz everytime when we reach straight line that car is just GONE. i could only hear the "below off" sound from his turbo.
and he told my with $1000 that car can simply go to 400 hp, just need to modify the chip. i'd say R and supra TT are two different level cars, there is no way u can compare them

Re: Supra VS TypeR (mugenr#1011)
if you read SCC you might remember the article on the guy ( i think it was John Haferty????) who had a supra TT and was a Pro Solo driver on the national level. I believe he has won the nationals but dont quote me on it. I think set up right, the supra could very easily beat an itr on a road course, auto-x wouldnt be quite as easy but it is possible.
Now dont get me wrong, i love the R but im not nieve. I guess when it comes down to it, you have to realize what kind of car you are looking for.
In reality, most people set up their cars up to shine on the track when they spend most of the time on the street, and on teh street the TT will smoke an ITR.
I would get the TT.

Re: Supra VS TypeR (hennessey)
very true, with just one 1k in mods to the sup TT, your looking at around 450hp, crazy if you ask me, then again we are comparing apples to oranges

Re: Supra VS TypeR (R-Adrenaline)
I always think ITR is a great car all the way around, the looks, performance, handling. But I think Supra is a totally different car then the ITR and it couldn't be compare...the msrp on both cars are way different. I'm not saying the Supra TT is better than the ITR, is just that they're both in totally different class, Supra should be compared to RX-7, 300ZX, Skyline and so on. Out of the box the Supra TT will offer better performance obviously, and as handling wise Supra TT has a totally different characteristics than the ITR since it's an FR (I think RWD car is very fun to drive). As far as on the street HWY racing a fully tuned ITR will be smoked by a slightly tuned supra, with the right driver though
in conclusion, it all depends on what u want or what is your goal? The ITR will make a better grocery car on the weekdays (without all the thefts) and road race car on the weekends. The ITR gives better gas mileage and NA motor is far more reliable than turbo cars IMO. But the Supra TT will get more attention from the chicks , and the torque will make girls **** on their pants hehehe...allright enough for now

Re: Supra VS TypeR (forksports)
I seriously looked at TT supras before I bought my R. As far as numbers go, they have the ITR by the *****. a $1500 investment will have you in the ~400rwhp range with a Lexus like idle. But the problem is the **** is so big and heavy, i didnt find them that much fun the drive. Yes it will hauls some serious ***, but its not that much fun to me. I could have gotten one, but I went with the ITR because its quick, nimble, and handling is its forte, which is what i wanted. Two different types of cars. Like someone mentioned, 400hp at the wheels is a lot to handle, I would be in jail or dead right now. **** i've gotten in enough trouble with ~170fwhp.
Dont buy an NA!!!! they have similar engines to the TT, but only just. you have to do some major building to get a NA single turbo to be as strong and reliable as a singled you started from a tt motor. Not to mention the TT has the great brakes, tranny and rear end.
