Today as I turned my A/C I noticed steam coming out of the vent and afterwards it smelled like something burnt.... what could be the problem?

I have heard of small animals getting into the fresh air ducts and dying.
One thing I do that helps eliminate possible odor build up, is just before you get to your destination, turn off the AC and let the fan run.
AC creates moisture (Look under the car after parking, after using it) and you need to blow out the moisture.
Moisture+dark places= mold and mildew=nasty smells.
